Mom visiting! Help! (NYC)
My dear old (well, not that old) mum is coming to town to visit me from Chicago this weekend. Being a poor college student, I would like to show her some places that are fun and unpretentious, but perhaps slightly more expensive than what I would normally buy for myself. We're both fairly adventurous eaters, but I'm not looking for something with a fussy menu that lists each and every far-flung ingredient the kitchen has. I'm also not looking to break the bank, just something a little snazzy (aiming for $100-150 total, including drinks and tip); in the general downtown area (east side or west), or north Brooklyn. Some places I've never been to and am considering: Momofuku Ssam (though I frequent the Noodle Bar), Spotted Pig, Marlow & Sons. Any help would be much appreciated!
paris paris.
will be in paris for the last week of may and would love to hear your best secrets. pastries, bars, markets, lunch, dinner, dessert. any little tidbit would be wonderful...
NYC Lower East Side recommendations, please!
Hi, NYC food-savvy people!
We are a group of 15, needing to make a reservation in the LES. We were originally going to Café Mogador, but they can only accommodate a group of 12. Looking for something cheap, as we are mainly writerly, new entrepreneurial types -- and also with vegetarian options (one gal is also gluten/wheat-free, egg-free, and nut-free, in addition to being a vegetarian, but I won't ask you to go there...)
locally grown food
Can anyone recommend some restaurants in nyc that serve locally grown food?
Fresh Ricotta!
I'm lucky enough to have fresh, whole-milk ricotta sitting in my refrigerator. I used some last night for a pasta, but I'd like to make something with the remaining 8 ounces. Any creative ideas would be greatly appreciated!
Those green sprouts inside garlic
No matter how fresh the garlic is when I buy it, it always seems to develop those annoying little green centers shortly afterward. I always remove them because I find them to be bitter. Any ideas for preventing their appearance?
Chinatown, SOS!
Okay, I know it is last minute but I can't help it. I'm taking friends to eat lunch in Chinatown,NYC, today. I love New Chao Chow( per Ed Levine), but I need alternatives, fast. HELP!!!!
Something a little more exotic...
My little sous chefs are bugging me for more exotic food. I'm not talking about Andrew Zimmern type foods either! My husband is Mexican and I'm Italian, so we've got that covered. They want Indian, Korean, Chinese, ect. We have lots of ethnic stores in our area, I just don't know where to start. Cookbooks, websites? Please help me, before there's a riot at my house!
Urgent! Recs for wine pairing with ham...
Red or white? Drink what you like? We've done chards and sav blancs with ham (honey-baked style) for so many years in the past, I'm thinking of doing a pinot noir or merlot this time. Is that too radical? We have a decent wine cellar, so I can pretty much grab anything at this point. We love wine, but are definitely not in the "wine snob" group.
With the kind of sweet/spicy flavors on a honeybaked ham, am I right-on or way-off with what I am proposing to pair with it? What else would you oenophiles recommend?
I need good eats! Memphis, Reno, Phoenix
My boyfriend and I have possible trips lined up for Phoenix, AZ, Memphis, Tennessee and Reno, Nevada. Does anyone know where to get good eats in any of these cities. I'll eat and am willing to try just about anything and my boyfriend likes stick to your ribs comfort food. Anyone have any suggestions?
Eating Out In Vancouver, BC
I need some advice regarding eating out in Vancouver BC
... though I am in the process of getting an Undergrad degree, it doesn't mean I don't like to eat well, so every few months I take someone who enjoys & is adventurous about food (one of my 4 roommates, boyfriend, my sister) out for a (more) expensive meal, just to splurge on something nice when papers & school gets depressing...
so does anyone have suggestions?
I looked on the internet, but I prefer suggestions that I can't get lost in!
thanks!
What should I make from Bittman's "How to cook everything..."?
I just purchased "How to cook everything...". I'm excited to get cooking but I'm overwhelmed. I've looked through the entire book several times but can't figure out where to start or what to try. My friend suggested I start at the beginning and try everything once. Any suggestions? Ideas for a meal? Help!
Serious cocktails.
What's your favorite cocktail? What must you always have in your home liquor cabinet? What do you always order out?
I'm in a rut and sick of the vodka-tonics, vodka-cranberries, beers... Every time I read Paul Clarke's articles on SE, most of the ingredients are foreign to me. (Sorry, Paul.) Any recommendations to expand my palate?
(PS I can't stand gin.)
London/Paris
Where would you be sure not to miss if you were going to London and Paris for a few days each. Not asking for the most formal or fanciest (not that they can't be), just the best places for outstanding meals. Thanks in advance.

Eating out in Breckenridge, CO?
Hi everyone! I'm going skiing in Breckenridge for a week, and need some help with restaurant recommendations. I've tried trusting the reviews on tripadvisor before, but they have done me wrong time and time again. I need recommendations (and places to avoid) from people who KNOW FOOD -- that's you, serious eaters!
Help Me Eat My Way Through Germany!
I will need so much exercise after all the meats and beers. However, if you have any favorite spots in Berlin, Munich, Dresden, Nuremberg, or Salzburg (Austria), let me know so I can at least have a game plan.

Recommendations for favorite Bar-B-Que cook book?
I am originally from Kansas City, MO...now living in mid-Michigan and I need a BBQ fix! So, my only solution is to start making my own. I guess I should clarify that I am talking about smoky slow cooked BBQ. If you have a good recipe or cook book suggestion I would love to hear it :-) Thanks!
NYC: Inexpensive and Elegant
My husband and I will be in New York for two weeks. He hates to pay for fancy-pants restaurants unless it's a special occasion, and he knows the restaurant will deliver (something besides bragging rights, that is). We'll be staying with a long-time friend who will be celebrating a "big" birthday. She is not a fan of the funky. OK. There will be a blow-out celebratory dinner, I'm sure. But besides that, I will be caught between the two of them. Please, help! Do you know places that are delicious, elegant, and good value?
Friends Arriving - Where to get Pizza?
So I have three friends arriving tomorrow and they want "real" NYC pizza. Looking for pizza and a soda, around $15/person, where do I take them? I was thinking the UES John's (better quality than the other locations), but there has to be better pizza out there. Ideas? Thanks!
Recommendations for Warsaw?
Favorite bakeries? Favorite restaurants or cafes? Grocery stores, open air markets? Favorite non-Polish food places?
Going to Charleston!
The hubs and I are headed to Charleston in April. I posted on Chowhound and got tons of recs, but this board has some pretty amazing ideas about food. I am much more adventurous with food than my man, but he goes with his sweetie's flows. :-D
Need Great Austin Eats!
I'll be visiting Austin, Texas in April and have started to scout some spots for the 5 day jaunt. What are some great central city eats? I'm looking for low-key, funky places for dinner, as well as great breakfast joints. Maybe a couple of places that are good for groups too. And if anyone wants to throw in some bars with good music and beers, I'd love some tips. Thanks!
New York Bakeries
I'm headed off to NYC in a few weeks and am hoping to find a few bakeries to stop at. Do you have any favorites in the city? Do you know of any (ahem) healthy bakeries? Ones that specifically focus on making lower fat or lower sugar treats?
I'm really pretty clueless and I'd love any suggestions!!

Manhattan Dining For A Large Group Of Teens
Does anyone have any suggestions for decent and reasonable food for a gaggle of Atlanta high school kids coming to NYC to see plays and take an acting class? Including chaperones the number is 26. They are staying at the Edison; one of the plays is at the Roundabout, the others in the theater district. Please don't mention Tad's.

So my Family and I are going to Paris ( ah...sigh) this August for a week. Any recommendations for good eats there? Particularly open air farmers markets..affordable places for affordable lunches, chic places for classy dinners, and good brekafastplaces as well! Please do inform me of all you know!

The Long Search for Pizza in South Florida
I've been looking for really good pizza in South Florida. I use to visit NY every year and my neighbor was Italian (she owned a pizza parlor and served the best pizza). I'm looking for pizza with a very thin crust, seriously chewy cheese that when you take a bite you get this long string of cheese from your mouth to the slice. Don't even suggest Miami's Best, I think they should be sued for claiming such an outrageous thing. Their pizza is terrible. Anyone knows a place with good pizza?
Quick! Affordable (AND tasty) New York midtown dinner ideas?
I know midtown NY isn't always the greatest or most affordable neighborhood to eat in - I'm more of a downtown gal myself. But I have a friend who's staying at the Hilton at 53rd and 6th and I need a restaurant suggestion for tonight. She only has about 2.5 hours available so going farther downtown isn't going to cut it. Something casual, inexpensive to mid-range ($40-50/pp), where having some wine won't totally break the bank. Thanks for your suggestions in advance!
Bread maker recommendations?
Tired of paying $4/loaf for organic sandwich bread, I'd like to invest in a bread machine. I've never used one before, and there are so many on the market that I don't even know where to begin.
I would use it for loaves of whole wheat sandwich bread, and occasionally some fruit/nut breads. Preferably something on the fast side, not too bulky, and does not easily overheat.
What do you use? Is there one that fits these specs? Thanks!
Eating in South Beach
I'm looking for great eats in South Beach --- breakfasts, lunches, and dinners (ranging from dives to expensive). We're foodies. Thanks!

Places to eat in London and Ireland?
I'll be going to London and Ireland in April with my husband and some friends. I would love recommendations on places to eat (especially ones that won't break the bank!) and what kinds of food are good in those places. We'll be going all over Ireland -- Dublin, Belfast, Killarney, etc. (basically a big cirle around the country).
Mediterranean Cookbook recommendation needed!
I am in search of a Mediterranean cookbook for a birthday present to my cousin...nothing too difficult, but a cookbook that is creative! So my dear Serious Eats readers, I ask you--any suggestions?
Olive Oil
I'm looking for some recommendations for the best olive oil to use on salads. Nothing too heavy.
Can you recommend some good (food) gardening resources?
I will soon be taking care of a garden that includes but is not limited to: heirloom tomatoes, figs, guavas, oranges, lemons, grapefruits, eggplants, chili peppers. I know absolutely *nothing* about gardening. Where should I start? Magazines, books, websites?
Cookie press recommendations
I'm interested in buying a good (i.e. mechanically reliable) cookie press (or gun, as I've seen them called). I am not at all mechanically inclined, and after a fiasco about 12 years ago involving a supposedly "good" press, swore them off (literally too, I'm afraid to say) and stuck to a cookie repertoire that didn't require a press. But now I'm willing to try one again - - can anyone recommend a good brand for mechanical cowards like me?

Hi, all -- it's time for another birthday celebration in lovely Manhattan...but we need help deciding where to go with a large group! We've done Otto, Dim Sum Go Go, and Korea Town....Help! Looking for great food, good prices, and nice atmosphere. Thanks in advance!
Ithaca, New York: What/Where to Eat?

I suppose this is a fairly broad request, but what are your thoughts on Indian food? Anyone have any recommendations for fabulous Indian meals, both in NYC and all over the Indian subcontinent?
