Black raspberries- I'm bragging with no shame

My inlaws have several hundred acres of farmland. On said farmland one can find black raspberries. Lots of them. And if one treats one's husband right, said husband will pick said raspberries even though he can't stand them and bring them home for one to fashion into a pie.

OR

I have 4 cups of FREE black raspberries sitting in my fridge. :P They will become pie tonight. Ain't life grand?

Ok, they weren't entirely free since the husband scraped the hell out of his arms getting them for me and I have to make a cobbler as payment. But it sure beats paying $5 for a 1/2 pint at the store.

Anyone else have a fabulous produce windfall this summer?

Eggplant Overload

Help! Between my CSA basket and a very productive plant in my own garden I have a refrigerator filling with eggplant. Is there any way to preserve it for future use or should I just reach for the elastic waisted pants?

Are We Eating Tomatoes Now?

When BK put a couple of slices on my Whopper last week, I took 'em off (although I wanted them. Wanted them bad.)

When I found them chopped into a prepared salad at Whole Foods, I said, "Perhaps this isn't just a silly mistake?"

And yesterday, when slices of tomato were placed upon my bagel-lox-and-cream-cheese at Russ & Daughters, I gave in and said, "Oh, if you think it's okay..."

So what goes on?

Annoying misinformation on TV

I know I tend toward the compulsive side but, once again this morning, I got to hear wrong information being preached as the truth on FN. This time, it was Tyler Florence going on about how the tomatillo is not related to tomatoes but is related to gooseberry. Sigh...

Granted, I have gardened for over 40 years, so the lack of understanding that some chefs display regarding their ingredients might be forgivable. But, the authority with which it is delivered really annoys me. If I remember correctly, Alton Brown said the very same thing regarding this fruit (as if from the same script). For the record (apologies in advance to those who know), tomatillo, like tomatoes, peppers (more on this in a second) and eggplants, are all members of the nightshade family. As is the CAPE GOOSEBERRY, otherwise known as ground cherry, which looks like a small tomatillo but is sweet. REAL gooseberries are related to currants.

I seem to remember Alton Brown dressing down some poor woman who was competing in one of the Next Food Network Star episodes because she said chilies are a type of pepper. He jumped all over her when, in fact, she was right. (No, black pepper is not even remotely related.)

My point is - where's the fact checking? These are two instances that my background enables me to catch with authority. What other misinformation is disseminated?

Yeah, I know, I shouldn't be surprised given how FN has gone. Has anyone else caught any mistakes that should be set right?

Fennel?

Have a large amount of fresh fennel in my garden. Any recipe ideas??

yellow plaintains

i have a passion for fried ripe plaintains, and usually have a couple going in my fruit basket, but it's hit or miss as to whether they will ripen sufficiently into the mushy, golden, sweet and sour fruit of my dreams before getting moldy or dessiccated. or -- they'll sit there for weeks and still be hard and starchy and bland after they blacken. does anyone know how to pick them at the store and ripen them to a reliable sweetness?

The Last Buys of Summer

Yes, I know that summer's over, but summer produce is hanging on. When I saw the inexorable march of apples and squash today, I bought two quarts of blueberries, two pounds of aji (seasoning ) peppers, and four pounds of red bell peppers. How are you facing the changeover to fall and winter foods?

Pick Your Own Produce (VA/MD/W.VA)

A week or so ago, the Washington Post ran it's annual "Pick-Your-Own" list of VA/MD/WVA farms that let you pick your own produce. I took the time to enter the locations listed into Google Maps.

Question of the Day: Does (produce) size matter?

Those insanely large fruits and vegetables at the grocery store: Do you pick them up or walk on by?
