Best. Gift. Ever!
A recent post by someone saying they want their date to bring them different kinds of flour, as opossed to flowers, got me thinking- what's the best culinarty related gift you've ever been given? My boyfriend gave me a crazy and cool herb garden, my sister-in-law gave me a load of her family recipes as well as my first set of pastry tips and bags, my best friend made me a Mexican corn cheesecake for my birthday and my dad, much like he did when I was a little kid, will still take me to Mexican markets and let me pick out whatever strange things I want, usually things I've never eaten or worked with before and the bill's on him- as long as I share whatever it is I make. What about all of you, ever get any food related gifts that you loved?
Ooh, aah: Holiday gifts
In addition to a very ugly necklace handmade by Indian women, I received some food related gifts:
A bento box (so cute! I'm in love with it)
A Mr. Bento (nice, but I'll never, ever use it. It's too large for me to want to carry it, and I already own a hot-cold thermos)
A loose-leaf tea brewing teapot
Pastry bags and decorating tips
A dessert cookbook (which I will exchange for something I'll use)
A cookbook from my aunt's church (which should be burned. I don't know why Southern Methodists think that Jesus blessed Velvetta)
What did you get for Christmas? (If you say a KitchenAid Mixer, I will track you down, hurt you, and maybe take it).
Giving a kitchen appliance this Christmas? Why?
Kitchen appliances are sometimes seen as "insensitive" as a gift. But in some cases, the opposite can very-much be true. This year we're giving my mom the ice cream freezer she's wanted for some time. Of the wooden bucket variety, she's specifically wanted one with a hand crank, which has been difficult to come by at a reasonable price. This year we found one with both a hand crank and a motor attachment, so she can switch over when she gets tired.
Are you giving something like this, this year? If so, tell the story!
Favorite Food Gift to Give
Most years I make homemade lemoncello as gifts for my friends for the holidays. Do you have anything special you like to make as your big holiday food gift?
What's your favorite food gift to receive?
When you are on the receiving end, what food gifts do you like the best? Was it homemade by a friend? Ordered & sent from an online source by a family member? I love, love to be given homemade yeast breads & rolls. What food & beverage gifts are your favorites?
Kitchen/Food Gifts. Are you a me first or you first?
Is it something you'd love to have for yourself, or something you appreciate so much you wanted another to have one too?
Guess I'm a me first. I got a polder digital thermometer for a friend who is a phenomenal cook. I love mine - never need to open the oven or grill to check the progress. Also got some forschner chef knives and boos butcher blocks for several family members, 'cause I use mine everyday. How 'bout you?
All I want for Christmas (Hanukah, etc.) is ________
I want a slow cooker, I've made up my mind. I hope someone who's getting me a gift reads this. What culinary gift are you dying for this holiday season?
Cookware Advice
I want to get my sister cookware for Christmas, and I am looking for advice on what kind to get. I've been looking at All-Clad sets, but they are a bit more than I want to spend.
My roommate has a Calphalon pan that I love to cook on, but I think it is from the One line which is just as pricey as the All-Clad.
I've heard the Wolfgang Puck sets are decent, but was wondering if anyone has any other recommendations.
Our dad's a chef so we appreciate quality cooking products, and I'd like to get her something that will last a while.
Christmas List: Cookbooks/Food Lit
I'm putting together my Christmas wish list on Amazon to share with my family. Besides a food cooking tools (new muffin pans, a 9" springform cake pan) I'm planning on adding a lot of cookbooks and food literature. On the list so far -
The Tenth Muse - Judith Jones
The Amateur Gourmet - Adam Roberts
Art of Simple Food - Alice Waters
The Lee Bros Southern Cookbook - Lee Brothers
Jamie's Dinners - Jamie Oliver
This list will keep growing but I'm curious what would be on your list.
Seeking Gift Ideas
I am seeking some unique gift ideas for someone very into food/cooking/eating/etc. I was hoping for some ideas in the mid-to-high end range, that go beyond the normal gadgets that come to mind. Maybe some kind of food or foodie experience. Thanks.
Question of the Day: What was in your last "care package"?
Care packages are a great way to say "hey, I'm thinking about you today". Do you send (or receive) gift packages of food to (or from) family or friends? Homemade stuff? Speciality foods not available to the other person? Homemade cookies were always my favorite.
