Kumquats!
I recently bought a bunch of these adorable little citrus fruits and was wondering if anyone had any interesting ideas on what to do with them. I have had them candied and with gingerbread before but other than that I'm at a loss but willing to experiment, any ideas?
meyer lemons vs. regular
I grabbed a bag of lemons the other day during a rush through the store and realized when I got home that they were Meyer lemons. Not having any prior experience with them, I started to grate one for zest in a recipe and immediately noticed the lack of strong lemon scent. What can I do with them? Why do they have this mystique about them? I think I need to be educated.
Which fruit do you avoid?
Mine is pineapple. I dislike all forms...fresh, canned, dried & even the juice! It is a texture thing for me & not crazy about the taste, either :( Really gets under my skin when I discover some hiding in a piece of carrot cake! What fruit would you rather not eat?
What's your favorite citrus fruit?
These fruits vary in taste from extra-sweet to mouth-puckering & get an A+ for high vitamin C. Many are peeled & segments eaten out of hand. Others find their way into marinades, dressings, entrees, garnishes, an empty rind can be a container for sorbet or salad & zest is grated into many recipes, too. Better tasting & more plentiful during winter months---my favorite is the Texas grapefruit! What's your selection & uses for the citrus family?
What fruit could you eat every day for the rest of your life?
Anything you don't get sick of?
Do you 'taste-test' fruits at the grocery store?
Grapes can have odd flavors on occasion, so we generally have one of whatever looks best before commiting to them. Blueberries and strawberries can be the same way, but we won't check them if they're already in those closed plastic boxes. We've found recently though that some people cringe at tasting, say, grapes right out of the bag. They can get downright disgusted about it. Your thoughts? What do you do?
Question of the Day: Favorite melons?
For my money it's a ripe cranshaw. And please hold the prosciutto, salt, lime, hot sauce or other add-ons; you can't top perfection.
