I've been thinking a lot about brownie sundaes lately. I guess it all started last year, when I went to a restaurant with some friends. It was the sort of place where you would expect to see a brownie sundae—Buffalo wings, fish and chips, steak sandwiches with gravy and cheese—but for some reason, it wasn't on the menu. When our waitress brought our check at the end of the meal, there was a comment card tucked inside. We wrote: Great food, good beer. But you should have a brownie sundae. A few months ago we went back, and lo and behold, there it was: "our" brownie sundae. Then the conversation turned to what makes a good one: vanilla ice...

It's tougher than it looks. Open, flip over, push down on bottom, and finally, enjoy. Usually ice cream doesn't make people think this hard, but I actually had to watch a how-to video to understand the proper eating process of the new Ben & Jerry's Flipped Out sundae in a cup. You can easily pull back the wrapper and start spooning up layers of cookie dough, vanilla ice cream, and chocolate syrup (and save the next few seconds of your life) or you can go after the truth. The truth: Push down on the perforated circle underneath the cup. Following the Push-Up philosophy, you have to apply some pressure to release the good stuff. Out comes a hockey puck...

Photograph from GrubHub I love eating sundaes for the combination of ice cream, hot fudge, and whipped cream in each bite, but I hate that one sundae from a restaurant is usually too large for a single person (and sometimes two people) to eat. While excessiveness is part of the fun of a sundae, it's also part of the subsequent indigestion I feel (plus a dash of moaning) after polishing off every last bit. In my world, there is no willpower when a sundae is involved. That's why the One-Bite Sundae from Popeye's Soda Shop in Dresden, Ohio, appeals to me. GrubGrade features the sundae in their restaurant review. The sundae is topped with whipped cream, sprinkles, and your...

On April 3, 1892, the ice cream sundae was born at the Platt & Colt Pharmacy in Ithaca, New York. Or was it born in 1881 at Ed Berners' Ice Cream Parlor in Two Rivers, Wisconsin? What's Cooking America shares some history behind the "Sundae Wars" between these two cities who claim to be the birthplace of the sundae. Ithaca appears to have the most written documentation to back up its claim as the sundae's birthplace, including the oldest record of an ice cream sundae in the form of an ad placed in the Ithaca Daily Journal on October 5, 1892. There's even disagreement about the origins of the word "sundae," the most popular explanation being that it was changed...

Photograph by Matt Stoller. Beef and sundaes—individually delicious, but together? En route to the Republican National Convention, Matt of Open Left spotted this not-so-appetizing sign in Lincoln, Nebraska. The hot beef sundae includes: golden mashed potatoes covered with roasted beef, aged cheddar, more spuds, gravy (an homage to caramel syrup?), more cheese, and a slice of buttered toast. The cherry tomato plays the part of the maraschino cherry. [via The Washington Note]...

I'm still picking my jaw up off the floor after Raphael here at SE pointed out this set of photos from Mike Tyson's abandoned Ohio mansion. The place is apparently sitting vacant, still furnished, with doors wide open. But almost more amazing is that Tyson had a poolside sundae bar! And here's the kitchen. Three wall ovens, and an '80s-era TV sunk into a wall niche. [via MetaFilter]...

Baskin-Robbins is featuring a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup flavor all through March, April, and May, offering it in stores as scoops and prepackaged quarts, shakes, and sundaes, the latter of which sounds particularly scrumptious: "This madness is not just a layer of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, but three scoops of Reese's Peanut Butter Cup ice cream. How to top that? Hot fudge wouldn’t be enough. Let’s also add Reese's Peanut Butter Sauce and some whipped cream. Just for good measure."...
