There are so many things I've eaten or read about that I didn't get around to blabbing about on Serious Eats this year. Hey—I only have four eyes and two hands! So forthwith, posthaste, and ex post facto, here's a tasty tidbit that has been languishing in draft for much of 2008. The scene: Late 1970s, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1912, the Girl Scouts are pushing their 100th anniversary. But with few camp sites offering internet access and iPhone reception, and first aid badges losing hipness, the organization is fighting to remain relevant. With membership falling, the Girl Scouts hired a management consulting team and came up with one solution: de-emphasize the cookies. Apparently they want to be associated with more 21st century girl power, which doesn't leave room for the sweet snacks. Wait. Shouldn't cookies be associated with every era? And hope? And happiness? Either legend or fact has it that the first written record of s'mores dates back to 1927. But chances are, they did it the old-fashioned way back in the Roaring Twenties—with a twig and a roaring fire. Thank goodness for modern technology. This handy little gadget microwaves two perfect s'mores in 30 seconds. A water tank heats them through evenly (no more gushy marshmallow and cold, hard chocolate), and the arms hold the top graham cracker in place so there's no slip and slide. And it's dishwasher safe; although, chances are, you'll still get pretty messy....

When faced with cute Japanese candy, my brain tends to switch to "automatic Japanese candy response mode" by taking whatever candy is in front of me and placing it into my shopping basket. I have no choice but to buy what goes into my basket. No choice. Even if it's something as ridiculous as Takoyaki-ya San, a gummy candy meant to resemble octopus-filled dough balls. I saw it while shopping at Mitsuwa in Edgewater, New Jersey, where I only had to look at the package for two seconds before deciding, "This probably isn't worth my money, but I'm going to buy it anyway." I was surprised to see this limited edition version of chocolate-filled biscuit snack Koala's March when I visited Japanese shopping center Mitsuwa last weekend. More surprising was finding out that the only difference between this version and the Halloween version is the packaging and the designs printed on the cookies; the flavor is the same (I was hoping for pumpkin).
