Giant Cheetos vs. Regular Cheetos

In the battle between corn-based, cheese-flavored snacks, bigger is not always better.

How to Make Moffles, Mochi + Waffles

The moffle is a Japanese snack that's exactly what the portmanteau word adds up to—mochi plus waffle. Cubes of mochi (glutinous rice that's been pounded into a paste) are plopped into a waffle iron (or custom moffle irons in Japan). Panini presses apparently work or—just entertain the idea for a second—a George Foreman grill? The cubes flatten and grow waffle grooves and have a warm chewiness that's somewhere between a bread and a goo. Moffles have one of those textures where you have to chew the for length of the alphabet. They aren't the most flavorful thing in the world—I mean, it's rice paste—but part of the fun is jazzing up the crunchy surface with toppings, whether sweet or...

Grocery Ninja: Sambal Goreng Udang, Indonesian 'Furikake'

The Grocery Ninja leaves no aisle unexplored, no jar unopened, no produce untasted. Creep along with her below, and read all her mission reports here. These are one of the most addictive snacks I've come across since Calbee Shrimp Chips—which is saying a lot, given that in my household, we go through maybe three jumbo bags of Calbee a week (and then go and run a 10K after, but that's another story). Sambal goreng udang roughly translates to "fried chile prawns" and is a traditional Indonesian dish. In the original, you bring together a rempah—a pounded, wet spice mix of shallots, garlic, fresh turmeric, galangal, lemon grass, belacan (fermented shrimp paste), shredded makrud lime leaves, lime juice, and coconut cream....

Snapshots from the UK: Walkers' Crazy-Flavored Crisps Competition

The Brits are known for some wacky potato chips flavors—think Prawn Cocktail and Roast Chicken. When I first moved to England I committed myself to tasting them all, the only flavor I absolutely fell in love with being Sweet Chilli, as in Thai Sweet Chili Sauce. Now, powerhouse British "crisp" producers Walkers is asking the nation to vote for the next big flavor in its "Do Us a Flavour" competition that lasts until May 1. Being a Serious Eater has certain risks, and in the line of duty, I bit the dust—crazy-flavored dust that coated each and every chip. Eaters from around Britain sent in flavor ideas, and you'll never believe the finalists: exotic Crispy Duck & Hoisin, everyday...

Build a Snack Food Stadium For Your Super Bowl Party

Holy Taco got much holier after creating the best snack food stadium ever with a field of guacamole, Slim Jim goal posts and a Twinkie-buttressed stadium. Is that our favorite shaggy-haired Steelers safety Troy Polamalu down there? Oh, nope. Just a Vienna sausage in a cheddar helmet. For security purposes, a bacon wall will keep the throngs of screaming fans—in this case tortilla chips—from falling onto the field. And hey, what do you know. A 20-ounce sausage Goodyear blimp just chilling (thanks, Photoshop!). Total calories: 24,375. Total cost: $86.47. Total deliciousness: 1 Billion trillion dude. One billion trillion. Sounds pretty priceless. Related: All Aboard the Meat Ship, Matey...

Seagulls' Eggs Are Not Really Eggs

If you see a breakfast menu where the omelets are made of seagulls' eggs, beware. As the blog Umami Mart points out, seagulls' eggs are not really eggs at all, but a Japanese snack called "kamome no tamago." It's cake filled with bean paste and surrounded by white chocolate. Similar to a real egg, there are textural contrasts (between the coating, cake, and bean), and they're high in protein (thanks to the bean). But they probably don't taste as good with hash browns....

Mixed Review: Lipton's Onion Dip and Simply Organic's Guacamole for Football Parties

For quarterbacks and wide receivers, the football playoffs are all about touchdowns, field goals, and fumbles. For the rest of us, they're all about cold beers, crunchy chips, and creamy dips. With the NFC and AFC Championship games this Sunday and the Super Bowl coming up on February 1st, I decided to "tackle" two of America's favorite football snacking staples in this week's Mixed Review: Lipton's French onion dip and Simply Organic's guacamole....

Oprah Blames Weight Gain on Organic, Multigrain Blue Chips

Oprah gained 40 pounds, and one of her vices was blue corn chips. Hain-Celestial, the makers of the chips Oprah held up in the episode, gently encouraged her to stick to a single serving. On the same note, the Times warns that foods with a "health halo" can be evil....

Newman's Own's Wins 'San Francisco Chronicle' Soy Crisp Taste Test

Soy crisps are good because they establish the salty punch—whether ranchy, barbecuey, vinegary, or garlicky—but don't waste calories on a fatty base. No potatoes or other starchy chips, just puffed, low-fat soy crispiness. The San Francisco Chronicle realizes how puffy we all feel after the holidays, and how much we could use "snack alternatives," so they conducted a taste test with five brands. Newman's Own won for tastiest over Whole Foods' store brand 365, Glenny's, Gen Soy, and Safeway's Eating Right. As a soy chipper, I agree with the results, and hope Newman is watching from the clouds, knowing he did right in the soy snack world.
