Brussels Sprouts and Kimchi from Roy Choi's 'L.A. Son'

Roy Choi's recipe for brussels sprouts and kimchi in his new cookbook/memoir, L.A. Son, is a prime example of his effortless expertise in Korean fusion. He throws sprouts, butter, kimchi, lemon, and shiso all together in a hot pan for a dish that looks like a miss-mashed stir-fry but tastes like a dish that's been made by countless cooks for generations. Carne asada is featured early on in Roy Choi's new memoir and cookbook, L.A. Son. Choi noshed on these tacos growing up in Koreatown, and then later when he was riding in a lowrider crew. Given Choi's future success on the food truck circuit, this experience clearly had a lasting impression. More

Spaghetti Junction: The $4 Spaghetti That Tastes Almost as Good as the $24 Spaghetti From Roy Choi's 'L.A. Son'

Spaghetti in marinara sauce is not the first meal that comes to mind when I think of Roy Choi. Where does Italian food fit into his Korean-Mexican-American cuisine, and why is it featured in his new cookbook, L.A. Son? Marinara was one of the first dishes Choi mastered once he recovered from his gambling stint in the 1990s—and his sauce certainly has his own flair. More

If you open Roy Choi's new cookbook/memoir, L.A. Son, looking for Kogi taco recipes or stories about starting a food truck revolution, you'll be fresh out of luck. The book's emphasis is placed more on telling a story, but the mix of recipes—some come from his mother, some are his own—provides a fun glimpse into Choi's background, and his brash, expletive-laced writing style is woven throughout the directions. Los Angeles Tacos Farley Elliott 4 comments

Years into his empire building, Roy Choi now controls much more than just a few loncheros that sling short rib tacos. His multi-faceted ventures include a Chinatown rice bowl spot we love, a reclaimed IHOP that serves quick and dirty dinner plates, and a South Central juice and smoothie house that's co-run by a giant food corporation. Indeed, Roy Choi is doing it all, while the rest of us just ride along through his twitter account @RidingShotgunLA. More

Where New Vegetarian Roy Choi Eats in Los Angeles

When Roy Choi recently announced that he's going vegetarian, the food world freaked out a little. Wait, the same dude who made Korean short rib sliders and pork belly tacos a thing? The Korean-American chef who started the Kogi truck back in 2008 (there's now a fleet of five trucks plus four brick-and-mortar restaurants, and he's working on a memoir, Spaghetti Junction) shared the news on his blog, Riding Shotgun. He wrote: "Animals be talking to me. They told me... stop. Stop, Roy. Please." Choi told us about his favorite spots for meatfree eating in Los Angeles. More
