I share Marvo of The Impulsive Buy's sentiment: "I’m allergic to cocktail umbrellas and drinks that make me look like a drunk sorority girl ready to flash her boobs when a video camera and Joe Francis come by." Hence I, like Marvo, have never experienced a Blue Hawaii cocktail, consisting of rum, pineapple juice, blue Curacao, sweet and sour mix, sometimes vodka, and always a festive paper umbrella.
Maybe I'd enjoy the Blue Hawaii better in soft drink form. This summer, Pepsi unleashed the limited-edition Pepsi Blue Hawaii. Sorry, unlucky Americans—it's only available in Japan. Marvo got his hands on a bottle and reviewed the drink, describing its color as "Smurf-like," and the pineapple and lemon flavor combo as "really smurfing sweet and artificial." Although the bottle is spiffed up with a picture of a palm tree and the blue Hawaiian sea, consumers are left to find their own cocktail umbrellas.
Last summer, Pepsi Japan did a similar limited flavor release for Pepsi Ice Cucumber, which sold out in less than a month.

Even though I think this commercial could be edited down by 30 seconds, I'm strangely drawn to it. I like the catchiness of the song; the cheeriness throws me off. All I can think is, "People are definitely not that happy when they drink Dr Pepper." But then again, I've never seen a naturally occurring group of young, carefree Dr Pepper drinkers frolicking on the beach and eating hot dogs; maybe they are that happy.
Watch the commercial, after the jump.

Over at beverage blog supreme The Knowlege For Thirst, Kfan just gave the new Diet Coke Plus a most curious review. If you haven't heard of it yet, it's a version of Diet Coke that's both sweetened with a blend of aspartame and acesulfame potassium and fortified with vitamins and minerals. A healthy(-ish) soft drink? Say it ain't so!
Have you spotted Diet Coke Plus in your area? Diet Coke addicts, what do you make of it? I'm one of those people who find all artificial sweeteners vile and will not touch diet sodas, but I'm still curious about what it tastes like.

Why do diet sodas taste like crap? Ed and Alaina both love Diet Coke but I think it's pretty nasty, it's got to be the regular stuff for me, and preferably from a glass bottle or can. Scientists from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign say people like me say we don't like diet sodas because of the chemicals, but the real reason we don't like them is because the high-fructose corn syrup in regular sodas give them a better mouth-feel.
I know they've done a study, but still: I call bullshit! Anyone who's ever had a Coke from outside the US or Passover Coke knows that real sugar is where it's at—you get a superior mouth-feel while drinking, and the aftertaste is clean and sweet. Coke made with high-fructose corn syrup is different but still good, but to me the ones made with sweeteners like aspartame and sucralose initially taste too sweet, then get bitter, and then leave my mouth feeling both dry and sticky. Ugh! No thanks! [via The Knowledge for Thirst]
