Eating for Two: Lasagna with Eggplant and Chard

©iStockPhoto.com/imagestock I'm due in about two weeks and my head is spinning. In between tying up loose ends with work and making the apartment baby-ready, I consider all the things I won’t be able to do for a while,...

Eating for Two: Quinoa Chowder with Spinach, Feta, and Scallions

©iStockphoto.com/timsa Last Sunday Olivia Judson, the New York Times’s resident evolutionary biologist, wrote a guest column referring to a study that has been troubling me for a month or so. Apparently if you give two groups of pregnant and lactating...

Eating for Two: Peanut Butter Cookies

Photograph from freedigitalphotos.net I was interested in Ed’s take on peanut butter and its role in weight loss, since the spread has a similar presence in my pregnancy. Peanut butter is a virtue and a vice. When I am good,...

Eating for Two: Candied Pumpkin Seeds

©iStockphoto.com/ilmwa555 I expected pregnancy to mean constant, overwhelming, dramatic hunger. I'm growing a human being here—where is my sandwich? This has not, however, been the case for me. After all, most pregnant women need only about 300 extra calories a...

We went to our first childbirth class on Sunday. Yikes! I hadn’t seen videos like that since the sex-ed unit in seventh grade life science, when I came home one day and burst into tears in front of my mother:...

Eating for Two: Whole-Wheat Pizza Crust

I remembered Patricia Wells’s whole-wheat pizza crust and resolved to bring it back into the rotation, topped with whatever I bring home from the Greenmarket and can’t figure out how to use. This is a thin, delicate crust: it doesn’t do well with pools of tomato sauce and gobs of cheese but is a nice match for sautéed vegetables with just a sprinkling of cheese, or herbs, or tomato rounds, when those come along.

Eating for Two: Julia Child's Cooked Egg Mayonnaise

Photograph from PPDIGITAL on Flickr I am not accustomed to being wary of food. My working assumption is that when I eat something in a restaurant it may, by accident or design, contain gross things that I don’t want to...

Eating for Two: A Healthier Oatmeal Raisin Cookie?

Many people ask me if pregnancy has increased my appetite. I don’t feel as if it has, although I hear that might change in the ravenous third trimester. I was already a hearty eater, not a Diet Coke and salad...
