A Sandwich a Day: Pulled Pork from Slow's Barbecue in Detroit

Detroit doesn't exactly have a style of barbecue it can call all its own, which is why Slow's, an institution-in-the-making on the main strip of Michigan Ave doesn't really have a style of its own either. Instead, you'll find their own versions of staples from around the country like Texas-style brisket, Carolina-style pulled pork, or St. Louis ribs.

Some Tasty Bites at the Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Fair

As summer fairs go, the one put on by the Martha's Vineyard Agricultural Society every August isn't huge, but it's great and has everything you'd want: skillet tosses, the watergun game, overgrown vegetables that win ribbons, and, of course, booth after booth of junk food.

A Sandwich a Day: Pulled Pork Torta from Izzoz Tacos in Austin, TX

Even if you come to Izzoz (pronounced eee-zoz) Tacos with the best intentions of ordering tacos, you may leave the cart with a pulled pork torta ($6.50), which is fine (as long as you also try the tacos at some point). The pork is juicy, slightly sweet and smoky with a punch of heat; it's been slow-roasting overnight with ancho chiles.

Five Nacho Variations

As editor of the site Nachos NY, it's obvious that I love nachos. But people always ask me, can one nacho really be that different from the next? Enough to inspire a whole blog? Oh, they absolutely can. Here are five variations on the nacho in honor of National Nacho Day (technically last Saturday, but it's never too late to celebrate) with cheesesteak, carne asada, buffalo chicken, pulled pork, and a dessert spin with Rice Krispies treats and brownies.

Hog Heaven in Nashville, Tennessee

"Hickory smoked," boasted Hog Heaven's menu in reverence to the barbecue gods. These words aren't the only abstraction of barbecue to be found here. Hog Heaven is a minuscule shack off Centennial Park in Nashville, located literally behind a McDonald's and adjunct to a honkytonk dive. There are a few key tenets to the art of barbecue, the holiest of which is using wood smoke to flavor meat. But does this always make for the best barbecue?

Big Apple Barbecue Block Party 2010 in Photos

The Eighth Annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party rolled into town this past weekend, bringing along seventeen different pitmasters from all over the country—representing the the diversity that is American barbecue. As each pitmaster focused their attention on only their one strongest item, the barbecue found at the event truly represented the best of the best.

Payne's Bar-B-Q in Memphis for One of the Best Chopped Pork Sandwiches

Payne's Bar-B-Q, a family operation that has been in business since 1972, serves some of the best pork barbecue in Memphis, if not the country. The fact that the first thing on my mind whenever I enter Memphis is a Payne's sandwich is no minor detail. When most people I know think of Memphis barbecue, images of ribs come to mind. The barbecue sandwich, however, is just as important to the Memphis barbecue experience. Slow-smoked pork shoulder, pulled, sliced, or chopped, topped with red barbecue sauce and stuffed into a bun with a scoop of slaw.

Chicago: Gettin' Sauced at Honky Tonk Barbecue

"Maybe even better than the pork is a crunchy-skinned half chicken featuring what often seems like the impossible: simultaneously moist thighs, legs, and breasts." Though my job is supposedly to find really great food experiences, I also have this really dirty habit of avoiding them. Usually it’s a mixture of procrastination or busyness, whereby I somehow miss the opening of a new spot, and before you know it, everyone, including my grandma, has blogged about how good the place is and how it’s become a Chicago classic—and then there’s no need for me to even try it. Honky Tonk Barbecue in Chicago is one of those places. While my grandmother hasn’t yet Twittered me about the pulled pork, they’ve already...

Photo of the Day: Pulled Pork On a Belgian Waffle

As documented earlier today, the Wafels & Dinges truck near Serious Eats HQ conceived a new combo. Their normal Belgian wafel topped with sauced-up pulled pork, coleslaw, and a fuchsia koolickle (pickle brined in Kool-Aid). WTF, you ask? It's meant to be eaten like a taco, with those sloppy innards falling out. I don't know about this one. I usually like to keep my pulled pork and waffles separate....
