Civil Court Judge Matthew Cooper denied the claim, saying that unpopped kernels were unavoidable: Until such time as the same bio-engineers who brought us seedless watermelon are able to develop a new strain of popping corn where every kernel is guaranteed to pop, we will just have to accept partially popped popcorn as part and parcel of the popcorn popping process. You can finally get some sleep tonight. Someone figured out how those popcorn kernels were mysteriously popping without a nearby microwave. Oh wait, there was a microwave involved! The magnetron, or the power-generator inside the machine, was hiding underneath the table. According to the video's step-by-step instructions, the process seems fairly simple: just dismember the microwave, connect a few extension cords and hook up that magnetron. According to UC Irvine professor Richard McKenzie in his new Freakonomics-esque book Why Popcorn Costs So Much at the Movies, And Other Pricing Puzzles, there's a more than 50 percent chance that medium bag with flexible sides is a better bang for your buck than the large tub with constricting, rigged sides. McKenzie points out that this excludes the free refills caveat included with the large portion. Those videos of cellphones popping popcorn? Turns out it was a viral marketing scheme for bluetooth headsets made by the company Cardo Systems. Their website (pictured below) runs the slogan "Making popcorn with a cellphone only happens in the movies," and a disclaimer that reads "The contents of these videos are fictitious and humorous optical illusions..."
