From burgers to Thai beef salads, vegetarian diner food to Roman-style pizza, the restaurant options around Wrigley Field are surprisingly diverse and plentiful. Here are just some of my favorites places to stop before or after a Cubs game.
'pizza rustica' on Serious Eats
The veggie slice ($2.50) at Pizza Rustica in University City is really all about the vegetables. The super-thin, cracker-like crust is merely a vessel for a cast of veggies featuring fresh mushrooms, spinach, artichoke hearts, caramelized onions, sun dried tomatoes, roasted red peppers, and little blobs of sweetly roasted garlic. A bit of crème fraîche mixes in with the mozz, accounting for a base that's a little bit more creamy than cheesy, adding a lightness that matches its veggie-centric toppings.
The Pizza Rustica served during Maialino's happy hour is a creation born from leftovers. Nicholas Anderer, Executive Chef at Maialino, takes Pizza Bianca from Sullivan Street Bakery (a rosemary, olive oil, and sea salt-accented flatbread) leftover from the restaurant's bread service, and elevates it to heights we, frankly, didn't know existed.
