Great New Tumblr Blog: 'Pizza in the Movies'

Slice Adam Kuban 6 comments

Ever see pizza appear in a movie scene and wish you could clip it and save it somehow? You know, to make a mental note of it? OK, yeah, there are maybe, like, 10 of us out there who have. But check out this newish Tumblr blog: Pizza in the Movies. It's got some familiar ones (Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Rock 'n' Roll High School) and some new-to-me entries (Duck Season? Hmm. Never heard of it.) It's funny, because we've usually tried to make a note of pizza references in movies and TV but never thought of devoting a whole blog to it. It's fun that someone else has. There seems to be a lot of pizza bloggers out there, and there are, but it's a small, mad, pizza-crazy world, as you'd imagine. Here's our friend Jason Feirman of I Dream of Pizza. Sit down in the hot seat, Jason! More

NJ.com Shines a Light on the Strange World of Pizza Bloggers

Slice Adam Kuban 9 comments

Yes, we're a strange lot, us pizza bloggers. Um, OK, actually, Peter J. Genovese, as part of NJ.com's spectacular pizza coverage this week, paints pizza bloggers as a social group of fun-loving obsessives. Which sounds about right. Getting name-checked in the article are folks you might recognize if you're pizza-obsessed yourself: Passion-4-Pizza Pizza Goon Me, Myself & Pie I Dream of Pizza Morta di Fame Stacey Snacks There are others, too, at the bottom of the article. Strangely, Paulie Gee gets mentioned as a pizza blogger, and while I can see why the reporter would make that mistake (Paulie is... More

Thanks, 'Urlesque'! Slice Places Among 'Best Pizza Websites'

Slice Adam Kuban 6 comments

The neato-links blog Urlesque had some kind words to say about Slice today, naming it one of the "Best Pizza Websites." I had to laugh when I read Drew Grant's take on the site: Slice: "America's Favorite Pizza Weblog!" the tag line of this SeriousEats site decrees, which made me wary of some ancient Angelfire or Geocities background. But the blog is up to date, with the most recent entry being Awl founder Choire Sicha's homemade recipe for a pie, which gives this "weblog" the hipster seal of approval. Other good entries include a link to where to buy the... More

Pizza Blog: Seth Mazow's 'Year of the Pizza'

Slice Adam Kuban 1 comment

[Photograph: Year of the Pizza] Speaking of Home Slice Pizza in Austin, Texas, I just realized that I'd never really given proper attention to the blog Year of the Pizza here on Slice. It was started last year by Seth Mazow after he worn a contest at Home Slice. He outlasted three other people in keeping his hands on a sub sandwich. For that, he won a year of free pizza at the pizzeria. Anytime he walked through the door, he was entitled to a large pizza with unlimited toppings. Q: Have you gained weight? A: Not yet. I... More

'New York Daily News' Profiles Colin of 'Slice Harvester'

Slice Adam Kuban 3 comments

New York Daily News The New York Daily News profiles Colin (no last name given), the guy behind the Slice Harvester blog: "I don't need some ... crab on my pizza," he said. "If you want to make some bread with sauce and cheese and put crab on top of it and call it a pizza, fine. Go for it. But that's not a pizza as far as I'm concerned." Slice Harvester debuted in August, vowing to eat at every pizzeria in New York City. Reactions were mixed when word got out about his quest, split between "Marry me?"... More

Another New Pizza Blog: 'Me, Myself, and Pie'

Slice Adam Kuban 2 comments

On Monday, we brought you word of Slice Harvester. Today, another newish pizza blog has come to our attention: Me, Myself, and Pie, helmed by one Brooks Jones. His mission statement: My name is Brooks Jones, and I love pizza. I am currently in the pre-production stage of a feature-length documentary about this divine cuisine, and this blog is serving as my research tracker. I'm eager to see the movie, but until then, I'll have to be content following along with Jones on his site.... More

New Pizza Blog 'Slice Harvester' Plans to Eat at Every Pizzeria in NYC

Slice Adam Kuban 6 comments

A new pizza blog called Slice Harvester has an ambitious mission statement: I am going to eat a slice of pizza at every pizzeria in New York City. I'm going by neighborhood, starting in Manhattan, getting a plain slice at every place. I am fucking sick of the current trend in Pizza Journalism that's all about fucking artichoke guacamole tahini pizza on rice dough. That shit isn't pizza. Sorry. The only instances where "not pizza" actually is pizza are Zante's in San Francisco on like, 27th and Mission that makes Indian Pizza, and the Turkish Pizza places in Berlin.... More

I WANT This Pizza for Dinner

Slice Adam Kuban 10 comments

pizzablogger.org Pizzablogger says this version of his Sicilian pizza is "not quite where I want it just yet." Whatevs. If that's truly the case, I'll take a couple slices (one corner and one side-center) of imperfection. Look at the hole structure of that thing! And I second HollandJim's comment, "Ooooooooooh. Giiiiiiimmegimmegimme [that recipe]!"... More

'Pizza Blogger' Interview with Joe Edwardsen of Baltimore's Joe Squared

Slice Adam Kuban 1 comment

Speaking of pizza blogs, one that I've been enjoying immensely as of late is Baltimore-based Pizza Blogger. And this interview with Joe Squared's Joe Edwardsen (above) illustrates what I like about the site. "Pizza Blogger," as the anonymous author prefers to be known, asks Edwardsen a series of knowledgeable questions about Joe Squared's coal oven and the dough-making process. The questions are obviously informed by PB's experience working at D.C.-area bakery Uptown Bakers. PB's knowledge and passion shines through in all his posts. I come away from the site with the feeling that the entries are well-researched and trustworthy.... More

Meet Aaron Landry, the Twin Cities' Sage of Slicedom

Photograph from Bill.Roehl on Flickr Nice to see Minneapolis's Aaron Landry get some props for his pizza-blogging. His site, found at s4xton.com, isn't primarily about pizza, but he attacks this dear-to-my-heart subject with great passion. He's got a number of reviews from his hometown, a roundup from Kentucky as well as a nice selection from visits to New York City and D.C. To narrow his site's content to pizza, visit his "pizza" category page.... More
