Cocktail Photography Q&A with Sara Remington

The Pegu Blog has some good advice from photographer Sara Remington for shooting cocktails and food in general. Or, you could just stop being weird, quit taking pictures of food and drinks, and apply her advice to everyday situations (like people and the outdoors). [via David Lebovitz]...

Our Own Robyn Lee on 'No Reservations'

Photograph courtesy of Kathryn Yu's Flickr photostream Well, it's not like Serious Eats' Robyn Lee was a talking head on No Reservations, but you do see the back of her head on the show. FoSE Kathryn Yu captured the moment. There's Robyn in the background having lunch at Momofuku Ssam Bar. Update: Highmtn pointed out this photo in Robyn's Flickr stream. Thanks! Strangely appropriate, as the episode had to do with food porn, which Robyn excels at. Bourdain talks about food porn in this blog post and in this video with David Chang, where Bourdain says: It's anti-food in a sense. This is the thing with the food nerds—they're your most loyal followers. They spread the gospel, for sure,...

Food Autopsy Photos by Kathryn Parker Almanas

Photographer Kathryn Parker Almanas has a sort of medical, laboratorial style of food photography. Her shots of day-old danishes and French macarons appear in test tubes, sterile plastic bags, and shrouded with gauze. They are pretty spectacular, in a twisted necropsy kind of way. [via Feature Shoot]...

Russian Food Styling

Русиан фуд стылинь ат итз финест. This gallery of Russian meat-product styling is pretty amazing. I don't know if it's a joke or not, but the backgrounds, embellishments, and props that accompany the sausages and such are really baffling. [via Fine Furious Life] Update: It looks like it's genuine. Here's the official site for the meat products....

The Year That Was: Photography

Continuing The Year That Was are our favorite photography stories from 2008. Photograph by Graciepoo on Flickr After renown New York City chef David Chang banned photography at his restaurant Momofuku Ko, we asked other chefs and restaurateurs what they thought about customer photography in their upscale restaurants. That set off some insightful reader debate whether foodie photographers should be allowed to shoot their dishes. The banning of photography extended beyond restaurants—the famous Tsukiji market in Tokyo banned camera-toting tourists from visiting during the early morning market. But don't feel deterred from whipping out your camera at a meal, as we learned that taking photos of food may help you lose weight. We also learned that food porn is similar...

The rest of the year is packed with travel, gallery exhibitions, magazine and ad photography assignments with a bit of backyard gardening, cat maintenance, and skateboarding in Portland, Oregon. Coffee Cup in an Old Lens

We know that food and photography go well together, but now they've literally been joined. Sadly this creation is strictly the work of Photoshop, but that hasn't stopped people from speculating on how to actually make it. How Food Porn Is Like Real Porn

Rachael Ray poses for FHM in 2003. Barbara Nitke, an established porn still photographer since 1982, was interviewed by Frederick Kaufman for Harper’s magazine two years ago, but the piece just went online last week. The two sat down and watched food television, as Nitke pointed out the fundamental parallels between porn porn and gastroporn. You watch porn saying, Yes, I could do that. You dream that you’re there, but you know you couldn’t...That’s exactly the way the porn thing works. The sex, of course, is impossible to replicate. As she points out, you can hardly ever make the recipes match their gussied-up and perfect on-screen or printed siblings. Food Network is not ashamed of this fantasy either. According...
