For years I've taken a (very) small measure of Kansas pride in the fact that my home state is host to one half of the International Pancake Day Race. Each year on Shrove Tuesday, residents of Liberal, Kansas, race their counterparts in Olney, England, all with pancake pans—and pancakes—in hand. Having never attended a race, I was under the impression that runners had to flip their pancakes throughout the event. Wrong. They flip once at the beginning and once at the end—to prove they still have their pancake payload. [The incriminating video, after the jump.]...

"It's Nannerpus!!!" It's...what? If I had watched the Super Bowl then I would've seen this Denny's commercial at the appropriate time, like before they gave away their advertised free Grand Slam breakfasts on February 3. But better late than never, as it took me about two seconds to fall in love with the eight-legged, mustachioed, pancake-loving banana. And even if the commercial is outdated, Nannerpus lives on at nannerpus.com, Twitter, and Deviant Art. Watch the video after the jump....

mailonsunday.co.uk Yes, I would like some pancakes, Mr. Robot. The Japanese have done it again with the Motoman robot, a pancake-flipping wonder of circuits and electricity. This awesome machine recently debuted at a three-day exhibition of robots in Osaka. If you could have a robot, what would you want it to cook for you? [via Coldmud]...

With Mark Bittman sharing the small screen with Mario Batali and Gwyneth Paltrow in Spain...On the Road Again, food blogger Sabra Krock of Cookbook Catchall takes this timely opportunity to remind us of his "Perfect Pancake" piece for the New York Times. She re-creates her favorite "foolproof" Bittman ricotta pancake recipe with syrup and blueberries. Sabra writes, "I love Mark Bittman. His recipes are always straight-forward and just work. You can never have enough Bittman."...

When it comes to pancakes, I've always scoffed at boxed mixes such as Aunt Jemima and Bisquick. With a basic formula of flour, sugar, baking powder, milk, and eggs, why not just make them from scratch on your own? And don't even get me started on artificially-flavored maple syrup—I'm from New England, where that stuff is practically illegal. But recently, in my quest to find mixes with a bit of magic—ones that taste like the real thing, cut down on kitchen time, and are inexpensive—I came across Stonewall Kitchen Blueberry Pancake and Waffle Mix ($10). The Stonewall Kitchen company is based Maine, a.k.a. land of blueberries. If ever there was a pancake mix out there with all the flavor of...

Wandering through the aisles of a local Whole Foods last week, I happened upon a novel curiosity, the Organic Batter Blaster. Had I discovered this pancake batter dispenser (à la Reddi Wip) at a regular grocery store amid packages of gray bologna and preshredded mozzarella-type cheese, I probably would have moved fearfully onward without giving the thing a second look. But there it was, getting cozy with a rainbow of soy milks, a few aisles over from the organic burdock tea, and my intrigue was piqued. I paused, walked on, doubled back, picked a can up and read the label, put it back, paused again, snuck a can into my cart, slipped it back on the shelf, and walked a...

The robust winter grain doesn't get much love, but it's actually inspired an annual festival in West Virginia, and has created an emerging gluten-free beer market, cereal options galore, and day jobs for these two dudes, Cliff Orr and Andrew Schuck. They work at the 200-year-old Birkett Mills factory in New York's Finger Lakes region, where they chaperoned the two girls behind Kitchen Caravan, a delightful online cooking show, around the scene—even showing them the griddle where the world's largest buckwheat pancake was created! Speaking of pancakes, check out Kitchen Caravan's recipe for much smaller pancakes, the Russian-style buckwheat blinis with smoked salmon.
