This recipe reminds me of early mornings on the ski hill, trying to find that balance of something that will keep me (trying) to stay upright on the slopes for the entire morning without weighing me down. Granola and milk seem like the perfect solution.

I hadn't thought of fruity candy in a long time, until recently when I was reading
David Lebovitz's
blog, in which he spoke of his love of orange slice candy. I recalled seeing
several recipes for cookies with orange slice candy, often made with
oatmeal. It seemed like the perfect candidate for a whimsical no-bake cookie.

Forget girls versus boys:
the real social hierarchy in grade school is the division between kids with Cool Lunches and kids with Dorky Lunches. not even Oreos could compete with my friend Amy's lunch treat. Amy had the officially, totally tubular, Coolest Snack of all:
Tastykake Butterscotch Krimpets. I was not even allowed to
ask for Krimpets when shopping with my mom. To this day, I have never had Butterscotch Krimpets but am pleased to share these homemade (and slightly healthier!) butterscotch treats made with oats.

My daily breakfast of yogurt and granola is (almost) as important to me as my morning coffee. Baking up a batch every couple of weeks is another nice ritual. It's really easy, and unlike the store-bought alternative, you can create exactly the balance of fruit, nuts, grains, sweetness, and richness you want. This slideshow will show you the basics of granola-making, with some ideas for a classic version, as well as a more decadent closer-to-candy recipe (with chocolate chips!) and a savory twist with fennel seeds.

When it gets too hot to eat oatmeal in July,
I eat it cold—in cookie form. These cookies are as close to sexy as oatmeal gets—butter, peanut butter, chocolate, and no need to turn on the oven.
For oatmeal haters, they're a good way to ease into the joys of this gluten-free grain.

In America, flapjacks are just a synonym for pancakes. When I first saw "flapjacks" at a Tesco in England, I was confused. These were actually bar cookies made of oats, butter or margarine, and sugar syrup—not what I usually picture as flapjacks. But the first time I bit into the combination of sweet wholesomeness and fat, I experienced a brain explosion.

You have to respect
Trader Joe's for addressing such an important issue: that steelcut oatmeal takes
forever to cook. Sometimes up to 45 minutes, it's just too long to justify outside of a weekend breakfast luxury. But wait. Trader Joe's is now selling
frozen steelcut oatmeal—three words you never thought you'd hear together—and it's ready in
less than three minutes. Which got us thinking, what if we made a big pot of steelcut oatmeal and started freezing it in an ice cube tray?

Sometimes, you just have to eat a granola bar. Maybe you want a rib-eye steak, but you're stuck on a wildernessy trail or just at your cubicle, and the rectangular snack is all you got. There was a day when the
Quaker Chewys were the leader of the pack. But the granola bar aisle has come a long way, expanding into bars with flax seed, exotic dried fruits (exotic as in, beyond just raisins), and pumpkin seeds (when it's not even October!).
We tried about 20 snack bars, in search of the most satisfying ones that didn't just taste like candy. No offense, candy, but this isn't your taste test. Find out which bars were our favorites.

Photograph from chotda on Flickr If your blowtorch has been getting dusty lately, don't worry. Oatmeal brûlée is a wonderful alternative to its custard cousin. Just make a normal batch of oatmeal (with old-fashioned or steel cut oats), sprinkle a thin layer of brown sugar on top, and fire away. If you're blowtorch-less, you can always go the broiler route.
