Last year McDonald's stepped up to the oatmeal scene with their
Maple and Fruit oatmeal. The flavor is still available, but now joined by another:
Apple Cinnamon Walnut Oatmeal. While McOats should be a good thing for the world (more oats = a good thing), don't expect a stovetop-cooked texture or steel-cut sophistication.

With our new
Cereal Eats column in full swing, we've been spending more time eating and opining about cereal around the office. Dry or with milk? What kind of milk? And do you drink the cereal-stained leftover milk after? Are you still coping with the emotional issues associated with being raised in a sugary-cereal-free household? How has it affected the rest of your life? Because it clearly has. Hear from all of the SE staffers what cereals, both hot and cold, we like best.

Hurray for spring cleaning! The instant oatmeal pouches that lingered on our conference table for several days (er, weeks) after
the taste tests now live in harmony in one Giant Oatmeal Box (GOB). We recently plowed through GOB and spotted some fancy-looking packets from the
Better Oats brand, which won the
Apple Cinnamon division, in
Blueberry Muffin and Lavish Dark Chocolate. Hello microwave.

This marks
the third (and final, phew) piece in our instant oatmeal tasting series. This is probably when many of you stop being jealous of our taste tests. Maple Brown Sugar, let's just call it MBS, is typically the first to go in the instant oatmeal variety pack. Can it ever taste like the good stuff from sap-flowing trees? The market has expanded beyond our childhood pal Quaker, but are any of the newcomers an improvement? The SE quest to see if decent instant oatmeal exists continues.

Earlier this week, we told you the results from our
"Original" flavor instant oatmeal tasting. Going the instant route is a desperate move, and
as many of you pointed out, one that can be avoided. But for whatever reason (lack of caffeine, camping trip, masochism) some of us eat instant oatmeal. For the
Apple Cinnamon flavor round, we were curious if any brands actually tasted like
real apples. The kind from trees. Or does it all taste like the McDonald's fried apple pie filling? Find out the results.

Before we get into the tasting results, let's be clear on one thing: making oatmeal the old-fashioned way (in a pot, on the stove) is the preferred method. But sometimes you're already 15 minutes late, or there's no stovetop in sight. We scoured the grocery aisles in search of a satisfying instant oatmeal. Does it exist? Do they all turn into a pile of blobby mush? Find out the results.

McDonald's recently launched a new breakfast item:
Maple and Fruit Oatmeal. We thought it was too sweet, and not in a maple-y way. In a whoa, hold back on the sugar way. Not a huge surprise here but the oatmeal doesn't contain actual maple syrup, just "natural maple flavoring." The Vermont Agency of Agriculture calls this a violation of the state's strict maple law.

Earlier this week, McDonald's officially launched their oatmeal. The little tub the
Maple and Fruit Oatmeal ($2.29) comes in says "Undeniably Delicious Oatmeal" under the Golden Arches logo—not the case. It's just so disturbingly sweet; McFlurry levels of sweet. I'd rather eat an Egg McMuffin any day of the week. And with a whoppin'
290 calories, which is pretty high considering there aren't even nuts involved, you might as well.

Oatmeal should be celebrated everyday, but especially today. Because apparently it's
National Oatmeal Day! If you're really serious about both oatmeal
and fall, skip the normal bowl and eat it from a carved-out pumpkin. (Gross or glorious?) Whether sweet or the more risqué savory, steel-cut or rolled oats, oatmeal is one of our food best friends. Here are five ways to enjoy oatmeal on its big day. Grab your
spurtle!

I hadn't thought of fruity candy in a long time, until recently when I was reading
David Lebovitz's
blog, in which he spoke of his love of orange slice candy. I recalled seeing
several recipes for cookies with orange slice candy, often made with
oatmeal. It seemed like the perfect candidate for a whimsical no-bake cookie.
