A Sandwich a Day: Lefse from Viking Soul Food Cart in Portland, OR

Viking Soul Food is in my favorite Portland pod (that's a cluster of food carts). It's the only Norwegian cart in the city, with a menu that focuses on lefse (pronounced lef-suh). The thin potato flatbread is baked on a griddle then drizzled with local honey or filled with savory options like cured salmon or Norse meatballs with Gjetost sauce.

Grilling: Barbecue Meatballs

These are some awesomely flavored meatballs. They have everything I was looking for: a slight smokiness, a big meatiness, and an unmistakable barbecue flavor from the rub/sauce combo.

Sandwich a Day: Hoi An Meatball Sandwich at Out the Door, San Francisco

This almost-banh-mi has many of the same trappings as the popular Vietnamese sandwich we know and love. The juicy pork meatballs on this Hoi An Meatball Sandwich ($8.50) pack a lot of flavor. The meat has a pronounced porkiness as well as an unexpected crunch from diced jicama. The meatballs are simmered in tomato sauce which lends a little heat as well as the addictive stink of fish sauce.

A Sandwich A Day: Meatball Sandwich from George's Sandwich Shop in Philadelphia

During our recent epic search for Philadelphia's best sandwiches, we searched high and low for a really good meatball sandwich, and suffered through a lot of lukewarm, tasteless, bready meatballs covered with cheap mozzarella on soggy rolls. But George's delicious, tender meatballs slow-cooked in family-recipe sauce and served simply on a roll with a shake of parm was hands down the best I've ever had in Philadelphia.

Snapshots from Sweden: Heberleins, a Grocery Store with Soul and a Whole Lot of Cured Meat

On the outside wall of Heberleins under their windows decorated with red checkered curtains reads, "matbutiken med känsla," or "grocery store with soul." And that's what it looks like at first glance: a humble, just large enough, well stocked mom-and-pop grocery store with produce, dry and canned goods, beverages, dairy products, the requisite wall of loose candy bins...oh, and a long deli counter stuffed with sausages, hams, various cold cuts and cured meats, and more.

Cooking with Kids: Turkey Kale Meatballs

These turkey and kale meatballs are a big hit with my kids Flannery, three-years-old, and Wyatt, 18 months. It's easy to get in a rut serving kids bland proteins (poached chicken, roasted salmon, sliced turkey...) but these meatballs are full of flavor and they're a great way to sneak a healthy green vegetable into the mix.

This Bites: Why Are Women Depicted Differently from Men in Food Photography?

I was at the New York Wine and Food Festival's Meatball Madness event last Thursday night when I was suddenly struck with the bizarreness of celebrity food paparazzi. I was part of the starstruck crowd gathered around Giada de Laurentiis's meatball stand, hoping for a glimpse of the Food Network star. She was there, looking (surprise) exactly like she does on her show, smiling with remarkable persistence. "Take a bite for us!" shouted a photographer jostling behind me. "Giada, can I have your balls?" cried someone else.

Man in Michigan Attempts to Make World's Largest Meatball

It's good to have goals. And for Gerald Barkley, a math and science teacher at a community college in Michigan, last weekend it was to make the world's first 350-pound meatball. "It started as a joke," his colleague told the South Bend Tribune (you know, just one of those, ha, what if we made a 350-pound ball of meat? jokes) inspired by a couple of major meatball records set last year: first on Jimmy Kimmel Live, which was later bested by Nonni's Italian Eatery in New Hampshire.

Mixed Review: Porta Mangiare Spicy Meatball Mix

Meatballs are having a moment. With the return to comfort cooking, everyone seems to be obsessed with the juicy meat orbs. For this week's Mixed Review, we tried an easy-to-prepare spicy meatball mix from Porta Mangiare, a gourmet Italian food purveyor, to see how it compares to the homemade version.

Weekend Cook and Tell: Spaghetti, Meatballs, and Wine

[Flickr: Shot_by_Cam] Last week's Weekend Cook and Tell challenge was all about an Italian-American classic, and its favorite quaffable partner: Spaghetti, Meatballs, and Wine. We asked you to share your favorite spaghetti and meatballs recipe, and throw in the wine pairings. This challenge inspired some pretty varied responses, some included meatballs, some wine, but the common thread was pasta. Here are some favorites: To kick off this round up, here's a quote from dmcavanagh: "Meatballs are as personal as fingerprints, 100 different people could serve you theirs and no two would be the same." Growing up in an Italian-American family meant that EliEats was no stranger to the traditional Sunday ragu. Along with plenty of spaghetti, meatballs, sausage and...
