The holiday season is a time to share gratitude with those you care about through gatherings and memorable meals. But with all the attention focused on the big feast, eating positively can often fall by the wayside. We wanted to find some ways to stay grounded and well during the season's hustle and bustle, so we spoke with Toby Amidor, an RD and nutrition expert to promote healthy holiday eating habits centered on real, pure foods.
'kashi' on Serious Eats
Earlier this summer, Kashi introduced two new cereals, Simply Maize and Indigo Morning. How do these new offerings stack up? Let's just say that Simply Maize is closer to popcorn or Cracker Jacks than any cereal I've met, and I like it.
The cereal aisle seems to be having its own battle between the seasons, as boxes of Kashi's Cinnamon Harvest and Honey Sunshine sat side by side. The bright cheery rays from the Honey Sunshine called to me, "Surely there's one more beach day" while the Cinnamon Harvest promised, "It's almost time for apple picking". I grabbed both boxes and explored this seasonal crisis with a bowl of milk and a spoon.
Of the many Kashi cereal varieties, GOLEAN was never one of my favorites. I associated it with vaguely brown crumbles that tasted of cabinet. But a recent nibble of GOLEAN Crisp! Toasted Berry Crumble gave me pause. High time to explore the line again! Kashi GOLEAN comes in five varieties, and boasts an impressive amount of fiber and protein. We tasted all five.
These days there are so many flavors of Kashi, it's hard to keep track. We've been Kashi fans over the years but decided to catch up by tasting some of the varieties we didn't recognize. Aha, but there is a cereal that has a heart theme. It's not flashy or fancy or cutesy or chocolate-y—it's one of Kashi's greatest hits and a damn fine cereal. In fact, a big bowl of this honey-kissed cereal might be just the trick to warm my heart this Valentine's day.
