Should Junk Food Help Pay for Health Care?

Erin Zimmer 50 comments

Congress is considering a ten percent "fat tax" on junk food to help pay for the expansion of health care coverage. But as the Economist points out, defining junk food is tricky. While sugary drinks, fries, and burgers might be lumped under this umbrella of fatty foods, they vary on the junky spectrum. Should it be based strictly on fat, calorie, or sugar content? Others have suggested a more direct, though controversial, approach to the tax: charging people based on BMI or body fat content. One Economist reader had the following to say: The common denominator among smokers is cigarettes, so we tax cigarettes. The common denominator among alcohol-abusers is alcoholic beverages, so we tax alcoholic beverages. The common... More

Life Savers Fruit Splosions, Double Creme Betweens, and Spitz sunflower seeds from paulandstorm. Doesn't a creme-filled chocolate cookie sandwich just put you in the mood? Eh, never did before, but now that Flickr user paulandstorm mentions it, maybe the Double Creme Betweens wrapper should include a "Parental Advisory" sticker. Shoot, no wonder kids these days are growing up so fast. Think of all the other double entendres in the snack aisle: Skor, Lays, Corn Nuts, Poppycock.... More

Junk Food Costs Less Than Fruits and Vegetables: Are We Surprised?

Ed Levine 23 comments

Junk food is cheap, cheaper in fact than fresh, healthy food! Junk food has more calories than its cheaper, healthier counterparts, so poor folks gravitate to junk food to fill up. These sad, obvious, and true findings are contained in a study conducted and released by researchers at the University of Washington. Serious Eaters, what can we as a society do if anything to deal with this? Healthy eating really does cost more, the New York Times reported. According to the paper, "That's what University of Washington researchers found when they compared the prices of 370 foods sold at supermarkets in the Seattle area. Calorie for calorie, junk foods not only cost less than fruits and vegetables, but junk food... More

Junk Food Fed Livestock

Alaina Browne 6 comments

The growing demand for corn-based ethanol is pushing up the price of corn, causing some livestock producers to supplement their animals' diets with more affordable human food: Dwight Hess, a cattle feedlot operator in Marietta, Pa., is located in the heart of snack country, near Hershey and Herr Foods Inc., a maker of potato chips, pretzels and snack mixes. His cattle ration consists of about 17% "candy meal," a blend of chocolate bars and large chunks of chocolate; 3% of what he calls "party mix," a blend of popcorn, pretzels, potato chips and cheese curls; 8% corn gluten; and the remainder corn and barley he grows. He says the byproducts save him about 10% on feed costs. Still, it costs... More

Pop Tart Ice Cream Sandwich

I love all things ice cream and have a soft spot for Pop Tarts, but I don't know about this Pop Tart Ice Cream Sandwich that Rakka made by squishing a scoop of peppermint ice cream between two cookies and cream Pop Tarts. She says it was "so very wrong but so disgustingly, deliciously right." (Oh, who am I trying to kid? I would totally eat it!)... More

Chain Restaurants and X-Treme Eating

Lia Bulaong Post a comment

The Center for Science in the Public Interest is pointing the finger at chain restaurants for the proliferation of X-treme Eating: "[The Cheesecake Factory's] Chris' Outrageous Chocolate Cake combines brownie, pie, and cheesecake into 1,380-calorie pudding. The CPSI says this is "the equivalent of eating two [McDonald's] Quarter Pounders plus a large fries - for dessert". "Since those chains make almost zero nutrition information available on menus, their customers don't have a clue that they might be getting a whole day's worth of calories in a single dish, or several days' worth in the whole meal," the centre says." One item mentioned in their press release is Uno Chicago Grill's Pizza Skins, but come on, if the menu says "We... More
