Video: Chipwich Ice Cream Sandwich Commercial

Richard LaMotta, creator of the Chipwich—two large chocolate chip cookies with vanilla ice cream smooshed in between—died last week at the age of 67. In 1982, he first dispatched 60 street-cart vendors selling the dessert sandwich and a few hours later, all 25,000 of them had been gobbled—"the start of something big." If you don't have two cookies and some ice cream nearby to honor the Chipwich inventor, find some later, and in the meantime, watch this old commercial. More

Smoky lamb sausage appetizer and gateau basque dessert. [Photographs: Erin Zimmer] Palace Kitchen 2030 5th Avenue, Seattle Washington 98121 (b/n Virginia and Lenora Street; map); 206-448-2001 tomdouglas.com/palace-kitchen Tom Douglas has a bakery, pizzeria, seafood restaurant, Greek spot, and two other eateries in Seattle, all within walking distance of each other. Depending on what food mood you're in, you'll find the right one—or if you're just hungry (and in town for a day) you'll feel overwhelmed and confused. Which to pick?! On a recent visit, Carey and I squeezed in both Palace Kitchen for dinner and Dahlia Bakery for breakfast within about ten hours of each other. We were that serious about experiencing the Tom Douglas juggernaut that Ed (and... More

Google Cafeteria Still Stocks It's-It Ice Cream Sandwiches

Despite recent budget-trimming at Google, the Bay Area's main campus still stocks It's-Its. Like the name, the institutional San Francisco dessert isn't complicated—just two chocolate-dipped oatmeal cookies sandwiching your choice of ice cream (strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, and mint). Kayoko of Umami Mart appreciated the cafeteria's Indian and sushi bars but knows where it's really at.... More

Photo of the Day: A True Ice Cream Sandwich

Photograph from manda_wong on Flickr Sometimes ice cream sandwiches stretch the truth a bit. Where's the white bread and mustard? OK, forget the mustard. But at least one Singaporean street vendor is taking the "sandwich" definition more seriously with this taro ice cream squished between multicolored bread. With crusts! Justice prevails.... More

Peanut Butter Ice Cream Sandwiches

Easy Home Cooking Magazine's recipe for Peanut Butter Ice Cream Triangles (at left) has you making the triangles out of scratch and then just adding vanilla, cinnamon or chocolate ice cream to make the ice cream sandwiches, but you can add some extra oomph by using Haagen-Dazs chocolate peanut butter ice cream to get PB flavor both inside and out. If you'd like to make the entire sandwich from scratch, ice cream included, Emeril Lagasse has a recipe for Peanut Butter and Chocolate Praline Ice Cream Sandwiches from a 1999 episode of Emeril Live, which'll have you making both vanilla-praline ice cream and the peanut butter chocolate pralines to sandwich them in. A lot of work to be sure,... More

Pop Tart Ice Cream Sandwich

I love all things ice cream and have a soft spot for Pop Tarts, but I don't know about this Pop Tart Ice Cream Sandwich that Rakka made by squishing a scoop of peppermint ice cream between two cookies and cream Pop Tarts. She says it was "so very wrong but so disgustingly, deliciously right." (Oh, who am I trying to kid? I would totally eat it!)... More
