"Did I really just hear a cardiologist, the butt of too many jokes on Serious Eats, tell me that I was skinny?" In the last couple of weeks, I've been spending too much time in the company of doctors. Last Wednesday, the day before I left for Miami, I saw my regular doctor, my referrer in HMO parlance, to see whether he could tell me what was causing the tightness on the right side of my chest (the side across from my heart). He couldn't find anything, and he didn't even notice I had lost weight. Doctors you see regularly are supposed to notice such things, aren't they? I went down to Miami to see if eating a mess of...

A current study from Annals of Internal Medicine says that cookbooks have been increasing portion sizes over the past 70 years. The study "found a nearly 40% increase in calories per serving for nearly every recipe reviewed, about an extra 77 calories," says Wall Street Journal....

"What does this mean? It means that when I go to Katz's I have a third of a pastrami sandwich...It means that when eating pizza, I try to make sure it has a supremely light crust and sparse toppings." I had a revealing conversation with Serious Eater Linnea yesterday afternoon that started me thinking about the exact nature of my diet. I was talking about what I was going to eat last night in anticipation of my weigh-in this morning. I mentioned the slice of pizza possibility. "A slice of pizza?" Linnea responded incredulously. "Doesn't that have a ton of fat? There's all that cheese. What kind of diet are you on, anyway?" I told her that the pizza I...

Photograph from malias on Flickr A recent study proved that eating too many eggs doesn't necessarily cause high blood cholesterol and heart disease. BBC News reports that the antiquated misconception that too many eggs are bad for you can finally go away. Egg lovers everywhere rejoice! In light of this new evidence, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) dropped its advice to limit egg consumption to three a week. Researcher Bruce Griffin said those on a low-cholesterol diet should be more concerned with cutting back saturated fats from fatty meats, dairy products, and pastries....

"I was being really careful, taking only one bite of everything, but you don't have to know differential calculus to realize that comes out to 20 bites of insanely rich and serious delicious food." All week I've exhibited what I consider to be great self-control, and I fear it's going to come to naught. My interim daily weigh-ins have not been encouraging, and I don't know why. Perhaps I need to reflect more carefully on what I really did eat this week? Last Saturday we headed to Baltimore for the weekend for a friend's surprise birthday party. We spent that afternoon wandering around the city. It was really fun and mostly not food-related, though I did have a few bites...

I knew this week was going to be trouble. Big trouble. I knew Thinner was going to be fickle and cranky and maybe downright rebellious, assisted in no small part by his partner, Mr. Metabolism. Mr. Metabolism was cross with me because I had crossed a line in his view, the 230 pound line. And when you cross a line with Mr. Metabolism you better be prepared to back it up big time with a downright abstemious week. Otherwise Mr. Metabolism will bounce you right back to the 230s and not even think twice. Because that's what he likes to do: Get you feeling confident and publicly declaring your 229-ness and then bam, he and his pal Thinner in the...

Would you like a nice, steamy liquid to go with your cold? Yes. Anahad O'Connor of the New York Times addresses whether or not hot liquids ease symptoms of a cold or flu. In a study done by researchers at the Common Cold Center at Cardiff University in Britain, hot drinks provided "immediate and sustained relief from symptoms of runny nose, cough, sneezing, sore throat, chilliness and tiredness," while the same drinks at room temperature provided relief for less symptoms. I have unknowingly been testing this theory on myself all week, as my throat feels like a cat crawled in and scratched at it and my voice sounds more like Scarlett Johanssen as a toad with each passing day....

Phew. The American Peanut Council issued a big fat list of safe peanut products, including Peter Pan, Skippy, Jif, and all Reese's and Ben & Jerry's products. The salmonella outbreak that originated at a Georgia peanut factory has already been responsible for seven deaths and 500-plus sicknesses. [via Doobybrain]...

"And as I approach my birthday in four days, I keep thinking about what a fine birthday present I will be giving myself when those magic numbers come up." As any serious eater who has wrestled with a weight problem will tell you, there are certain numbers in your head that loom ever so large—milestones and targets that you can't stop thinking about. Sometimes these numbers come in ten-pound increments. Other times they come out of books or tables. Though I started blogging about Ed Levine's Serious Diet almost exactly a year ago, when I weighed 252, I had actually started losing weight six months before that, when I was horrified to find that I was tipping the scales at...
