The
Healdsburg Farmers' Market, located about 70 miles north of San Francisco, is a bustling, medium-sized market in a small wine-country town. Whereas farmers' markets advertise vendors who are within 50 miles or so of a market, many of the Healdsburg Market vendors are local,
very local. Most of the vendors grow their vegetables right in Healdsburg.

Shopping for the bulk of your fruits and vegetables (and beyond, if you're lucky) at the farmers' market takes a handful of different skills than cruising the Piggly Wiggly. Because the availability of individual foods ebbs and flows in a wonderfully non-industrial pattern, you'll have to go with the flow MacGyver-style instead of pre-planning every detail of your meals for the week. Duct tape (while never discouraged) is not an essential tool for your market tote, but here are a few ideas that are.

Bay Area markets continue to be full of abundance this month. We're pretty lucky in California. While the market changes significantly throughout the seasons, we are not wanting for fruits, vegetables, or meats. This week, I'll be eating lots of
radishes, mushrooms, persimmons and pomegranates. (My fingers will be stained red after all those fresh pomegranates.)

The
Redmond Saturday Market is located in the open gravel lot next to the
Redmond Town Center, a large retail and business center in the downtown area of the city.
It's open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and offers fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as prepared foods and craft items. They also have a small stage area, so it's a family-friendly place to bring the whole family (dogs, too) and listen to some music while shopping. Check out photos of the seasonal produce.

The infamous winds of Chicago were howling off the lake and biting me through my terribly thin hoodie. With my arms folded over, I made my way through the market, wishing I had worn a coat. I was honestly a tad underwhelmed with the Logan Square Farmers' Market last year. There were too many pre-made food vendors, and not enough whole vegetables for me to buy and take home. I went back this weekend to see if I had caught the market too late in the season last year, or just on an off week. And luckily, I had. The Logan Square market was bursting from its seams with fresh vegetables, mounds of lettuce, and interesting stalls. It was a glorious Sunday....

It's been a couple weeks since I've attended a local farmers' market, which always unsettles me a bit. Even when I don't have much to buy, I enjoy checking out markets in the area because they help me remember where we are in the season and feel more connected to the time of year. After being away for several days, I stepped away from work for a few minutes to attend last Tuesday's Ferry Plaza Farmers' Market. Most of the customers at this market are business people from nearby offices picking up fruit and vegetables on their lunch hour. Farmer's markets all over the place--at the Ferry Plaza in San Francisco, in the Twin Cities, at the Greenmarket in New York City, and at Borough Market in London--are suffering from wintertime blues. Yeah, January's not the best time to be a locavore! But at the Ethicurean, Spanky Horowitz manages to have himself a good time at the market in Montreal anyway....
