You can always count on three or four food trucks parking alongside the Durham Farmers' Market, ready to serve an eclectic mix of portable breakfast and lunch offerings to the town's locavores and early risers.
Durham sometimes gets a bad rap. But you, Duke students, were not fooled and chose to attend school in the culinary core of the Triangle. Here are some of the places that you should make sure to check out before you four years are up.
Food trucks have been sprouting up so quickly around Raleigh and Durham that it's getting hard to keep track of them all. But don't worry, we're here to help. Our list of our 8 favorite trucks is a great place to start your own food truck journey.
This Cuban-sandwich-with-a-twist starts with a flat, tender-crispy roll made by local Guglhupf bakery. Next come layers of melted cheese, slow-roasted pork, and mashed avocado with garlic and salt, topped off with a schmear of yellow mustard and dash of tangy house-made mojo.
We're not going to lie: As any West Coast or Southwestern transplant can tell you, finding great tacos on the East Coast is no easy task, but it's not impossible. You just have to be willing to go a bit off the beaten path. Head to neighborhoods with large Mexican immigrant populations and the trucks hanging out on street corners. The east coast is where we also found some more of the high-end chefs making everything from the ultra-traditional to the far more rarefied taco.
The Rapini and Sweet Italian Sausage panini ($6.50) from Toast far from disappointed; it excelled. The bread was a crunchy, olive oil-glossed beauty with perfect grill marks, and the slices of sausage were large, sweet, porky, and studded with fennel.
The smoked turkey on Texas toast ($6.50) from The Q Shack is exactly what it sounds like: a deliciously simple meat-and-bread combo, ready for a slathering of one of the Shack's two housemade sauces (the potent vinegar-based garlic and chili, or slightly sweet tomato with a nice snap of chipotle).
