Photo of the Day: Penguin Tteok

As I mentioned before, I took a trip to Seoul last week to attend the 7th Annual Tteok Fair, a two-day event dedicated to the beloved Korean rice cake. Although I plan on writing more complete posts about the fair, I didn't want these nubbly penguin tteok from the rice cake making competition to get lost in the shuffle. Out of the hundreds of tteok creations I saw fashioned into flowers, tiered cakes, and other non-traditional shapes, I'm pretty sure these was the only ones shaped like penguins. They may not be elegant creations, but as a lover of all things that make me go, "Awww," these hold a special place in my heart....

Spatula Taxonomy

This image, created by Lunchbreath after walking around the International Housewares Show in Chicago last month, makes me wish that Disney would create an animated film called Snow White and the 137 Spatulas. In Videos: Dogs Baking Bread

Another reason why Sesame Street just rocks. In this educational segment on baking bread from the early 1990s, William Wegman's Weimaraner dogs knead blobs of dough in floral aprons (with human hands, that's key). The bakers seem pretty apathetic about the whole process, minus the licking the dough part (I feel ya, man!). It's unclear whether this becomes more or less creepy as an adult. The video, after the jump....

Finally, a Japanese Noodle Waterslide

How has the planet gone this long without a noodle waterslide? I’ve been eating noodles from plain old bowls for decades quite happily. But now that I’ve seen this noodle waterslide by the Japanese toymaker Bandai, I can’t imagine a world without one. The contraption is designed for thin, delicate wheat noodles called somen. During the summer in Japan, many restaurants actually serve nagashi somen, or “flowing noodles.” They set up a long bamboo chute running across the dining room; noodles flow through that channel in an icy water bath for hungry diners to fish out and enjoy. So Bandai asked the obvious question—what if that stream were a waterslide?—and gave us the answer. Here, the noodles emerge from a...

Bacon and Egg Jellyfish Plushie

Photograph from Yummy Pancake on Flickr Denise Ferguson has many cute food-related crocheted plushies (known as amigurumi) under her belt, but her bacon and egg jellyfish is one of the best/weirdest food plushies I've ever seen. Her other breakfast mutants include toast with bacon arms and Uber Creepy Breakfast Monster. You can buy her creations at Etsy. [via Found Shit and Knithacker]...

Photo of the Day: Chmurka's Picnic

Photograph from pyza* on Flickr Just like a human making spaghetti can't match the cuteness of a parrot making spaghetti, a human having a picnic isn't nearly as cute as Chmurka the hamster surrounded by a picnic spread. There's even an accompanying video. But this photo is all you need to enjoy the cuteness of the fuzzy rotund creature and her bounty of food. In Videos: 'Cooking with Dog' Makes Low-Fat Gyudon

I don’t know why we’ve never blogged about this video series before. You'd think Robyn would have been all over this—it's Japanese, it's cute, and it involves animals. And before you go there, it's about cooking along with a dog. A dog named Francis, who, as a friend pointed out, makes surprisingly sophisticated recipes. I mean, Cooking with Dog could easily have gone into superkitsch territory, in which the food was secondary to the talking-dog shtick. But, it doesn't. Probably because it’s from Japan and because the dog, a poodle, is of French origin. And, as you know, both cultures take their food very seriously. [Get cookin' with the video, after the jump.]...

In Videos: Anteater Drinking Wine

You know an anteater really loves wine when his hooked claw (shoot, that thing hasn't seen a file in years) grabs the hand holding the goblet to keep it steady. Glug, glug, glug. Luckily, there won't be much anteater aching tomorrow—it's really just sparkling cran-apple juice. Side note: who just casually has an anteater in their living room, let alone one swigging back a mysterious red beverage? The video, after the jump....
