I opened my new bottle of grapeseed oil bought from a Korean grocery store expecting a run-of-the-mill spout. but instead flicked open the cap to reveal a tube-like protrusion. My first thought was, "Damn, that's awesome!" But then I took a closer look and realized the tube was part of a larger design: an elephant's face. The spout was elevated from "awesome" to "BEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN (related to bottles of oil)." But seriously, isn't that an awesome design? Is anyone else's mind totally blown? (Please say yes, or else I'll think I'm insane.) I've lost count of how many times I've poured oil out of a bottle with a too-large spout and cursed the spout for... More
When I went home for July Fourth, my mom welcomed my brother and me with a delicious homemade dumpling feast. How did my mom, who probably hadn't made homemade dumplings in years, suddenly get the inspiration to whip up over 100 little meat-filled dough pouches? By watching Kung Fu Panda. Yes, a computer-animated movie about a hefty panda discovering his inner kung fu prowess drove my mom to dig into her latent memory bank of Chinese recipes. In the most dumpling heavy scene, Po (voiced by Jack Black), whose kung fu skills are provoked by the sight of food, must battle against Master Shifu (voiced by Dustin Hoffman) to get his hands on the last dumpling. Dumplings are awesome—I... More

Mark "The Minimalist" Bittman can kick back and relax when retirement phase rolls around. His three-year old co-star in this week's New York Times video on "Banana Paleta," a take on the Mexican ice pop, was the "Mini Minimalist," a three-year old whose YouTube videos over the last few months have mimicked the original Bittman videos with every Bittmanian hand motion, finesse and verbatim script—plus more mumbling, crawling and onesies. Was he listening to Bittman's voice instead of bedtime stories every night before bed? Mark Bitt-Little-Man seemed uncharacteristically shy this week as he pressed blender buttons with his godfather. Couldn't handle the stage-sharing? But he was himself again in this newest uploaded performance, a take on Bittman's braised short... More
It's hard for me to look at one of Jessie Oleson's drawings of anthropomorphized baked goods and not let out an aw-filled squeal. Her illustration of little Luxembourgers (similar to macarons) mistaking a hamburger for their mommy is ridiculously adorable. The Luxembourgers are so hopeful; the hamburger, so indifferent. You can buy this illustration at Jessie's Etsy shop. Related Photo of the Day: Cupcake vs. Muffin What to Do with Leftover Easter Candy Move Over, Rice Krispies: Cereal Treats Smackdown... More
Yesterday's Photo of the Day starred a boot-clad piggie. The green boots allow her to trod bravely through the mud, an accomplishment since she has mysophobia—a fear of dirt. The pig, who goes by Cinders, "because of its precious nature...won't be going to the slaughterhouse." Yay! BBC ran a story about Cinders, whose owners run a sausage company. Since Cinders is not destined for sausage, she will become the mascot for a campaign to raise money for the Farm Crisis Network, which supports struggling farmers. After the jump, Cinders, boots and all.... More
Yes, it's a baby pig wearing boots. The boots provide two functions: they make the pig look unbearably adorable and allow her to trod in the mud without fear, a big deal since she has mysophobia—a fear of dirt. [via Best Week Ever]... More
