[Photograph: Neiman Marcus] The annual Neiman Marcus Christmas Book sells fantasy items that about a fraction of a fraction of people could ever afford—$20 million submarine, $1.76 million space charter on the Virgin Galactic spaceship. But the most expensive item this year is relatively cheap: the $25,000 Cupcake Car. "Slip under the muffin top of your Cupcake Car, and let the world figure itself out for awhile," advertises the catalog. Maxing out at seven mph, the ride is tricked out with sprinkles and swirly frosting accessories. California-based artist Lisa Pongrace, who first launched the design at Burning Man, will even customize your topping. This marks Neiman Marcus's attempt to cut back on the $1 million-plus super-ridiculous gifts and settle...

[Photograph: Rose Petals Cakery] If the movie adaptation of the classic children's book didn't quite do it for you, then maybe these cupcakes will. They were made by Rose Petals Cakery of Naperville, Illinois, for a client who wanted treats for a group of kids to eat after seeing the flick. The spaghetti is buttercream, the meatball is Ferrero Rocher candy, the sauce is raspberry jam mixed with buttercream and the parmesan is grated white chocolate. It's almost hard to wrap your brain around the fact that they are sweet not savory. Sort of reminds me of meatloaf cake. [via Cupcakes Take the Cake]...

Not much explanation needed here, but there's more to the components than meets the eye. A video explaining the cupcake kebabs appears on the blog Cupcakes Take the Cake. These would be clever desserts to bring to a potluck cookout....

Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories Math has never exactly been my forté. If it involves food, however, I'll give it a whack. On first glance these fractal snowflake cupcakes are seemingly simple, with a series of triangles and what have you thrown together to make a darling little shape that reminds me of arts and crafts time. How wrong I was. These cakes require some serious math. Lets break it down, shall we? It all starts with a "simple" algorithm. The Koch snowflake algorithm consists of three identical Koch curves, which essentially make one large triangle. This triangle is cut into four smaller triangles made of blue fondant and then centered on another larger triangular base which is made of...

Photographs by Jessie Oleson Looking for a new cupcake recipe? Make ones that are built to last and won't add to your daily intake of calories (because they're inedible) with Jessie Oleson's fake cupcake-making tutorial at Cakespy. All you need is some plaster of Paris, paint, and cupcake liners, and you're ready to go. These fake cupcakes aren't completely random; Jessie wants you to take cupcake art to the streets. Her cupcake street art project began in January when she dispersed fake cupcakes with uplifting messages around Seattle. Do the same in your neighborhood to spread some cheer (or confuse a bunch of people)....

Cupcake Project Hamantashen cupcakes aren't just cupcakes topped with a hamantashen. Stef of Cupcake Project explains that, like the cookie, the cupcakes are also triangle-shaped, have a sugar cookie flavor, and filled with jam—and then they're topped with a hamantashen. Cookie-topped cake? I like the sound of that. (Stef also shares a recipe for making hamantashen.) [via Cupcakes Take the Cake] Related: How Much Should a Hamantaschen Weigh?...

Thus far a breast milk craze has not hit, but I am a little surprised. After all, it's the perfect organic, raw, and local food wrapped into one, neat, biodegradable package. And if you are going to drink milk, it's said to be better for you. Why is breast milk on my mind? Well, Vice magazine recently concocted a cupcake challenge [NSFW] using cow's milk and breast milk: After quietly chewing for a few minutes, he whispered, “I ... I can’t tell any difference at all." But we said, “No, you have to choose one.” So he held up the cupcake in his right hand and said, “This one is vaguely tastier.” And guess what, it was the boobcake!...

Available on Etsy, $26 Two bits of cupcake-related ephemera came across the transom this week. Might as well roll them into one post. First Corby Kummer examines the cupcake in the March issue of The Atlantic. After the now-obligatory yes-cupcakes-are-overexposed-but-I'm-still-going-to-write-about–them intro, he goes on to say that "the craze is worth keeping" if only so bakers will get the damn things right. Cupcakes may be largely icing-delivery vehicles, but the cake shouldn’t be cardboard and the icing shouldn’t be grease—twin concepts few artisan bakers (artisan being the new word for homemade) seem to get. Cooked French buttercream, which many of them choose (it shows off Technique), is not a suitable cupcake icing. It’s oily. It smears. A simple glaze—think...

Photograph by Robyn Lee The blog TV Tango thinks it has found evidence of an upcoming cupcake-themed show from the Food Network: About 10 days ago, Food Network filed a trademark application to protect 'Cupcake Wars' for "a continuing program about food and cooking." I can't find any other details about the show and my requests to Food Network for more information went unanswered. Wouldn't it be awesome if Food Network and The Post teamed up to do a "Cupcake War" series with each episode focusing on a different region? Manhattan one week, Chicago the next, then LA, and Orange County and on and on. Of course, just filing a trademark application doesn't guarantee that the Food Network will...
