Mixed Review: Sprinkles Pumpkin Cupcake Mix

"Even the dot was delicious!" Sprinkles, the wildly popular cupcake bakery that started in Beverly Hills, has been touted by many celebrities including Jon Stewart, Bobby Flay, and Oprah, and featured in countless publications (like Bon Appétit, Food & Wine, and the Los Angeles Times.) While other cupcakeries, such as New York's Magnolia, stick to classic flavors like vanilla and devil's food, Sprinkles offers up more than twenty inventive varieties including chai latte, coconut marshmallow, and ginger lemon. Distinguished by their signature dots, these sweet little confections are arguably the most famous dessert in Hollywood. Recently, Williams-Sonoma paired up with Sprinkles to create a line of cupcake mixes, so even if you don't live in 90210 territory you can still...

Video: Big Top Cupcake Informercial

More affordable and arguably more functional than Cupcake Cars, the Big Top Cupcake pan reverses the notion that cupcakes should be tiny and adorable—they should be massive beasts! Why make a normal cupcake when you can make one that's 25 times as big? As in, it makes that shooooomp sound that really heavy things (like dinosaurs or elephants) make when hitting the ground. The video, after the jump....

$25,000 Cupcake Car For Sale in Neiman Marcus Christmas Book

[Photograph: Neiman Marcus] The annual Neiman Marcus Christmas Book sells fantasy items that about a fraction of a fraction of people could ever afford—$20 million submarine, $1.76 million space charter on the Virgin Galactic spaceship. But the most expensive item this year is relatively cheap: the $25,000 Cupcake Car. "Slip under the muffin top of your Cupcake Car, and let the world figure itself out for awhile," advertises the catalog. Maxing out at seven mph, the ride is tricked out with sprinkles and swirly frosting accessories. California-based artist Lisa Pongrace, who first launched the design at Burning Man, will even customize your topping. This marks Neiman Marcus's attempt to cut back on the $1 million-plus super-ridiculous gifts and settle...

'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs' Cupcakes

[Photograph: Rose Petals Cakery] If the movie adaptation of the classic children's book didn't quite do it for you, then maybe these cupcakes will. They were made by Rose Petals Cakery of Naperville, Illinois, for a client who wanted treats for a group of kids to eat after seeing the flick. The spaghetti is buttercream, the meatball is Ferrero Rocher candy, the sauce is raspberry jam mixed with buttercream and the parmesan is grated white chocolate. It's almost hard to wrap your brain around the fact that they are sweet not savory. Sort of reminds me of meatloaf cake. [via Cupcakes Take the Cake]...

Mixed Review: VitaMuffin Deep Chocolate Muffin Mix

"More like a fudgy cupcake than anything wholesome." I admit it. I was late to the Vitalicious game. Three years ago, a friend of mine who was completely obsessed with Banana Nut VitaTops asked me to go in on a bulk order with her. (A case of six assorted VitaMixes for muffins and brownies is $33.30.) I declined. I had only ever seen Vitalicious products at "supplement" stores like GNC. I didn't believe they would actually taste good anymore than I believed the berry-flavored SlimQuick powdered drink mix would actually help me drop five pounds. But last week, as I contemplated yet another yawn-worthy yogurt and granola bar breakfast, I decided to give the Vitalicious brand a second look....

Fractal Snowflake + Cupcakes = Serious Math

Evil Mad Scientist Laboratories Math has never exactly been my forté. If it involves food, however, I'll give it a whack. On first glance these fractal snowflake cupcakes are seemingly simple, with a series of triangles and what have you thrown together to make a darling little shape that reminds me of arts and crafts time. How wrong I was. These cakes require some serious math. Lets break it down, shall we? It all starts with a "simple" algorithm. The Koch snowflake algorithm consists of three identical Koch curves, which essentially make one large triangle. This triangle is cut into four smaller triangles made of blue fondant and then centered on another larger triangular base which is made of...

How to Make Fake Cupcakes

Photographs by Jessie Oleson Looking for a new cupcake recipe? Make ones that are built to last and won't add to your daily intake of calories (because they're inedible) with Jessie Oleson's fake cupcake-making tutorial at Cakespy. All you need is some plaster of Paris, paint, and cupcake liners, and you're ready to go. These fake cupcakes aren't completely random; Jessie wants you to take cupcake art to the streets. Her cupcake street art project began in January when she dispersed fake cupcakes with uplifting messages around Seattle. Do the same in your neighborhood to spread some cheer (or confuse a bunch of people)....

Mixed Review: Miss Muffet's Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Cupcakes

The baking aisles at most supermarkets are under a monopoly: it's Dunkin Hines and Betty Crocker as far as the eye can see. But online retailers are a whole different story. Lucky for me, the Internet provides access to countless, crazy mixes from little-known producers, such as Miss Muffets, owned and operated by Carrie Brautigam. She makes all kinds of whimsical treats, ranging from Death by Chocolate Muffins and Nutrageous Blondie Brownies, to Champagne Bundt Cake and the subject of this week's Mixed Review: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Cupcakes....
