Tesco Busts Teenage Girls for Squeezing Muffins

Two 17-year-old girls were stopped at a Tesco in Exeter, England, after squeezing muffin tops (searching for the squishiest?) and apparently contaminating the poofs. According to the Mirror, they were hauled to the supermarket's basement to be questioned. Tesco decided not to press charges. [via Fork in the Road]...

Struggling Chef on Last Night's 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent'

Last night's episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent ("Salome in Manhattan") featured a plot revolving around a young, once-hot chef struggling to make a comeback while biding his time as host of a morning cooking spot on a local TV station. His girlfriend (and socialite daughter of a possible investor) is murdered, and detectives Wheeler and Nichols* catch the case. While there wasn't as much cheffage as I would have liked (look to "Death Roe" [Season 4, Episode 15] for a more chef-heavy—and dark—episode), the show did feature enough NYC restaurant-world verisimilitude to entertain. There's the young chef whose first restaurant was critically acclaimed but financially doomed, thanks to a bumbling business partner. There's a hip-hop star turned...

15 Illegal Immigrants Found in Tanker Truck of Cocoa Powder

The Daily Mail The Daily Mail: "One Mars worker said: 'The driver got on top to open the hatches on the roof. When the driver looked down he saw lots of men in brown-coloured clothes—all saturated with the powder.'" The truck was heading to the Mars Bar factory in Slough, England, where its cargo would have gone into Mars Bars, Twix, Snickers, and M&Ms. It's a fantastical and bewildering story, but it could have had a deadly ending. The cocoa powder in the truck is very fine, and the stowaways ran the risk of suffocating in the chocolate-rich air. [via @alisoncook]...

More Bay Area Restaurants Robbed

Armed robbers have been on the loose in Oakland this summer, targeting restaurants primarily around the Lake Merritt, Oakland Hills, and San Antonio neighborhoods. But Monday night, a robbery occurred in the upscale Rockridge district, marking the first instance in this area. At least two men wearing masks and hooded sweatshirts robbed Pasta Pomodoro at 5500 College Avenue, about ten minutes before closing. Nobody was hurt. Completely unrelated, the crime wave also struck the four-star restaurant La Folie in San Francisco's Russian Hill neighborhood. Thieves went straight for the safe, stealing the entire box and its contents. Unlike the Oakland robberies, this one happened after hours when no staffers or diners were inside the restaurant. Previously Oakland Restaurants Hit by...
