Trilobite Cookies

I haven't made George Hart's Trilobite Cookies yet so I don't know what they taste like, but his write-up is hilarious: "Trilobites are extinct marine animals which lived gazillions of years ago. Real trilobites may or may not have tasted like chicken. (who knows?) These cookies are the result of my most recent research into what ancient trilobites would have tasted like if primitive biochemical processes were based on jam/chocolate/cookie molecules. Independent paleoconfectionary laboratories often ask for my formula, so I have placed it here for the world to enjoy."...

The Case of the Mysterious Date Bars

"I first noticed them at the JollyMart, a block away from my office. There they were, stacked neatly to the right of the register, next to the Japanese gum, the chocolate wafer cookies, the Mozart candies—a pile of what looked like large, plastic-wrapped Fig Newtons." And so began an urban food mystery—who eats these and, more important, where do they come from?

Holiday Butter Cookies, Reviewed

Who knew? Our officemate Marco is seriously into holiday butter cookies. After chatting with him about them just now, he sent us to his review of Royal Dansk butter cookies. His favorites: The Pretzel Ones: These are always the first to go. It's not hard to see why - these have all of the benefits of a fused-sugar top, but with about two-thirds of the mass of the heavy Square Ones. These are the pinnacle of butter cookie development, and need to be kept exactly as they are. The Swirly Ones: As far as I can tell, these are just the Round Ones with a more interesting shape that results in a better texture. The complex shape crumbles more smoothly...

Oreos or Hydrox? Which is the superior cookie?

I've never been an Oreo freak. In fact, I like Hydrox cookies better. What about you, Oreos or Hydrox? I find the filling of both too sweet and grainy, though I do like the bittersweet taste of the chocolate cookies. But the Bouchon Bakery makes an amazing homemade oreo-style cookie called a (litigation-proof) TKO (Thomas Keller Oreo). The chocolate wafers are wonderful cookies in their own right. They're obviously made of excellent quality dark chocolate (Vahlrona) and plenty of butter. The filling is a revelation. According to noted cookies and 'cream maven Charlotte Druckman, the filling is made of white chocolate ganache. Keller himself confirmed that for me. This just in. What may be even better than the TKO is...

The Cookie Calorie Monster

Okay, I finally went to my supermarket to check out the caloric content of the national cookie brands to compare them to the 5o calorie (and rather small) South Beach Diet Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies. Sure enough a regular Chips Ahoy cookie has 53 1/3 calories, a s does a regular Oreo, and a Fig Newton has 55 calories. The only conclusion a sane man could come to: Eat two Oreos or Fig Newtons. Of course the problem is they don't make 100 calorie packages of regular Oreos or Fig Newtons. But doesn't this suggest a marketing opportunity for Nabisco?...

Another 100 calorie bag of happiness

In my never-ending quest for the perfect hundred calorie bag of happiness I have come across South Beach Diet Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies. I have to say that they're not bad, not bad at all. Which to my way of thinking is the highest accolade I can give a whole grain cookie made without butter. These cookies have a nice crunch, aren't too sweet, and are pretty tasty. They come two cookies to a bag, so utilizing my formidable math skills I conclude that each cookie has fifty calories. That seems like a lot to me, so I'm heading to the grocery store to check out the caloric content of various popular cookies. My beloved Oreo crisps have the same...
