Me like the Robert Downey Jr. of cookies." —Cookie Monster, on 'The Colbert Report' Nation, last Thursday, Stephen Colbert got a surprise visit from the Cookie Monster on The Colbert Report, just as he was lamenting the fact that fruit had replaced cookies as American kids' after-school snack of choice. Downright un-American, he said. Last night, on Jon Stewart's Daily Show, the two fake newsmen had a little back-and-forth about Cookie Monster's appearance. Seems the blue dude trashed Colbert's green room after getting angry about his green-room request list. Progressive advocacy group MoveOn.org will host bake sales across the country this Saturday, June 21, and Sunday, June 22, as part of "Hungry for Change," an attempt to fatten voters with chewy brownies while raising money for Democratic nominee Barack Obama. Already, 713 gatherings have formed. To find a bake sale near you, just punch in your zip code here, and if nothing pops up, form your own. As a non-partisan site, Serious Eats promises to report when Freedom's Watch or another conservative advocacy rallies together members for bake sales supporting John McCain. It seems like Cindy McCain is up to it again. It looks like she's been caught with her hand in the cookie jar trying to pass off other folks' recipes as her own. In this case, the nattering nabobs of negativity are saying she's guilty of lifting a recipe for Oatmeal Butterscotch Cookies from Hershey's. Here's Cindy McCain's recipe (part of a prospective first lady cookie showdown; here's Michelle Obama's Shortbread Cookies recipe). I'm going to give Ms. McCain the benefit of the doubt here. Michelle Obama's shortbread cookies versus Cindy McCain's oatmeal-butterscotch cookies. Who knew cookies had so much power? Readers of Family Circle have successfully predicted America's next first lady during the past four elections just by judging the presidential spouses' cookie recipes in the magazine's competition. Chocolate tends to win Family Circle readers over, but this year neither Michelle Obama or Cindy McCain contributed recipes for cookies including chocolate; Obama went with shortbread and McCain, oatmeal-butterscotch. Dunk 'em while you can, folks. Hydrox are back—but for a limited time only. Hydrox, the cookies that the Kellogg company drowned as a brand in 2003, will be hitting shelves once more, the Wall Street Journal reports, as the company bows "to more than 1,300 phone inquiries, an online petition with more than 1,000 signatures, and Internet chat sites lamenting the demise of the snack." But don't get too happy, Hydrox hounds. First, the comeback may only be temporary.
