Here are the pie contest winners BaHa wins the 2 pies for her evocative all pie Thanksgiving essay. Adam wins a single pie for identifying the 1902 NY Times quote. cgoup wins a single pie for identifying the Carl Sagan quote. The winners should e-mail me at nyeats@aol.com this morning and give me their particulars so that we can figure out how to get them their pies. I want to thank everyone for participating. There were so many good entries for the grand prize. Next year let's collectively think up a really great pie contest. And I promise I won't make the same mistake by asking questions that are easily found on Google or other search engines. For anyone...

Sunday Nov. 19th is the last day to enter the Thanksgiving pie contest. To win two superb pies of your choice just tell me in 100 words or less what your all pie Thanksgiving menu would consist of and why. On Monday I will announce the winner and figure out the logistics of delivering the pies. The other pie winners (for correctly identifying the two pie quotes) will also be notified then. Remember, both New Yorkers and non-New Yorkers can enter the contest. New Yorkers will receive two pies from either Two Little Red Hens or Yura & Company. Serious pie lovers in other cities will receive pies from either their favorite local pie baker or from Grand Traverse...

KEEP THE FAVORITE FOOD WRITER ENTRIES COMING I've been blown away by the quality of the entries for the Win A Dinner with Jeffrey Steingarten and Me contest. The breadth of candidates offered up by entrants (To enter you have to tell me in a hundred words or less who your favorite food critic is and why) has been impressive indeed: Frank Bruni, John T. Edge of Oxford, Mississippi, Robb Walsh of Houston, Texas, Calvin Trillin, the late R.W. Apple, Ruth Reichl, Peter Meehan (current $25 and under critic at the NY Times, Jonathan Kauffman (formerly of the East Bay Express), blogger Clotide Dusoulier, Roy Andries de Groot, A.A. Gill, Anthony Bourdain, and Jane and Michael Stern. But we still...

The contest entries have been extraordinary, and keep them coming, but the piece by my buddy Johnny Apple in yesterday's Times should have reminded all of us that Apple was an inspiration to all food writers and food lovers. Nobody bought more passion and knowledge, not to mention reportorial skill and know-how, to food writing than Johnny. Johnny's posthumously published story yesterday had me thinking about jumping on a series of planes immediately, and I don't have the frequent flyer miles or the cash to do so....

Who's your favorite restaurant critic? Adam Platt? Frank Bruni? Legends Ruth Reichl (shown above, incognito) or Gael Greene? Alan Richman? You can nominate anyone you want, not just the names above. Write a hundred words or less on who your favorite restaurant critic is and why. Here's a cheat sheet with the issues you should consider in making your choice: Food and Wine Expertise: Do they know their stuff when it comes to food and wine? Writing Chops: How well do they write? How good are they at describing food, setting scenes, turning a phrase, making you feel like you're at the restaurant as you read them? Authority: How authoritative are they? Are their reviews trustworthy? Do you believe...
