As we dig deeper and entrench ourselves in the recession, sales of such "basic" foodstuffs as Campbell's soup, Spam, and Kraft mac and cheese have seen an upswing. But for some, even those can be a luxury. But ad agencies Leo Burnett/Chicago and Starcom remind Chicago shoppers that "Food shouldn't be a luxury." To drive donations to the Greater Chicago Food Depository, news ads picture such pantry staples as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, soup, and broccoli posing for beauty shots with coiffed and coutured models....

Kudos to Foodie Obsessed for calling our attention to New York chef-restaurateur Tom Valenti's (Ouest and the forthcoming West Branch) appearance on the Today Show this past Thursday. Valenti made some of the contemporary-classic comfort-food dishes he does so well, but he wasn't on the show to promote his restaurants or a cookbook. Valenti came on to encourage viewers to donate money to a cause he deeply believes in, the Windows of Hope Family Relief Fund, "formed to provide aid, future scholarships, and funds to the families of the victims of the World Trade Center tragedy who worked in the food, beverage, and hospitality professions throughout the entire complex and who were lost on September 11." Millions of women and children in Africa have no access to clean drinking water, causing them to walk for miles every day to collect water that is dirty and unsafe to drink. charity: water, a non-profit organization that raises money to fund well-building projects, produced this PSA starring Jennifer Connelley to portray what life in New York City could be like if the taps went dry and there were no clean water. You may never have to carry 40-pound jerry cans of water home from Central Park, but millions of people around the world have to do something like this every day. Watch the video, after the jump....

So. Menu for Hope 4, the charity raffle organized by Pim Techamuanvivit (Chez Pim) that occurred in mid-December, managed to raise a whopping $91,188 for the U.N. World Food Program. Thanks to everyone who bought a ticket (or tickets) and to all the generous prize donors. And now the moment you ticket buyers have been waiting for: the results. In the rush to plan menus, shop for provisions, and cook the turkey, we often forget that there are Americans for whom Thanksgiving really isn't all that much different from any other day. When Serious Eater maggiesara checked with a food pantry near her to see what they'd be serving the homeless on Turkey Day, she found little in the way of traditional Thanksgiving fare: The usual Thursday breakfast [at the Central Synagogue soup kitchen] is beef stew, and when I asked, I was told that they were not going to be doing anything different for Thanksgiving. Menu for Hope, a charity fund-raiser that's become a yearly year-end thing for foodbloggers, managed to stir up $60,925.12 in its latest incarnation. The proceeds will go to the United Nations World Food Programme. If you bought a raffle ticket for one (or more) of the tasty prizes, winners will be announced January 15 on Chez Pim.
