Snapshots from Los Angeles Loves Alex's Lemonade Benefit

Last Last Sunday, on the lawn of Culver Studios, the chef-tacular second annual L.A. Loves Alex's Lemonade benefit was held for pediatric cancer research. Deeply moved by Alex's story, Los Angeles chefs Suzanne Goin(AOC, Lucques, Tavern) and husband David Lentz (The Hungry Cat), plus Goin's business partner Caroline Styne, have collected an astonishing group of chefs, mixologists and vintners. Everyone came out to lend a hand, a grill and a copious amount of wine and whisky to support the cause. More

Scott Wiener (Scott's Pizza Tours) emails us that he's once again putting together the annual Slice Out Hunger charity event. Proceeds go to City Harvest. Tickets are sold at the door and cost $1, each one redeemable for any one of a slice of pizza, a soda, or a raffle ticket. (Obviously you can buy more than one ticket if you're hungry and thirsty and feeling lucky.) More

Lace Up Your Shoes, Grab Your Napkins for the NYC Pizza Run

The NYC Pizza Run must be targeted toward that part of the Venn diagram where runners overlap with pizza-lovers. (Though who doesn't love pizza?) The run takes place on Sunday, September 19, at 10:45 a.m. in Tompkins Square Park in Manhattan's East Village. Participants will run four laps around the park for a total of 2.25 miles, consuming one slice at a pizza station at the end of the first three laps. Why not a fourth slice after the final lap? Event organizer Jason Feirman (of I Dream of Pizza) says, "I figured a fourth slice at the end might... More

The Mercury News: "Dining for Women is a national nonprofit organization based on a simple model of charitable giving. Once a month, women get together for a potluck dinner. Members in more than 130 chapters across the United States pool their money, resulting in significant, life-changing contributions.”... More

Luxe Ads for Everyday Food

As we dig deeper and entrench ourselves in the recession, sales of such "basic" foodstuffs as Campbell's soup, Spam, and Kraft mac and cheese have seen an upswing. But for some, even those can be a luxury. But ad agencies Leo Burnett/Chicago and Starcom remind Chicago shoppers that "Food shouldn't be a luxury." To drive donations to the Greater Chicago Food Depository, news ads picture such pantry staples as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, soup, and broccoli posing for beauty shots with coiffed and coutured models.... Tom Valenti Is a Mensch

Kudos to Foodie Obsessed for calling our attention to New York chef-restaurateur Tom Valenti's (Ouest and the forthcoming West Branch) appearance on the Today Show this past Thursday. Valenti made some of the contemporary-classic comfort-food dishes he does so well, but he wasn't on the show to promote his restaurants or a cookbook. Valenti came on to encourage viewers to donate money to a cause he deeply believes in, the Windows of Hope Family Relief Fund, "formed to provide aid, future scholarships, and funds to the families of the victims of the World Trade Center tragedy who worked in the food, beverage, and hospitality professions throughout the entire complex and who were lost on September 11." Tom is not only... More

Millions of women and children in Africa have no access to clean drinking water, causing them to walk for miles every day to collect water that is dirty and unsafe to drink. charity: water, a non-profit organization that raises money to fund well-building projects, produced this PSA starring Jennifer Connelley to portray what life in New York City could be like if the taps went dry and there were no clean water. 'Pie Project' Helping Those in Need on Thanksgiving

In the rush to plan menus, shop for provisions, and cook the turkey, we often forget that there are Americans for whom Thanksgiving really isn't all that much different from any other day. When Serious Eater maggiesara checked with a food pantry near her to see what they'd be serving the homeless on Turkey Day, she found little in the way of traditional Thanksgiving fare: The usual Thursday breakfast [at the Central Synagogue soup kitchen] is beef stew, and when I asked, I was told that they were not going to be doing anything different for Thanksgiving. It saddened me to think that the Synagogue's guests were going to be left out of the national feast. I mean, stew is... More
