Yellow Cake by Canadian animator Nick Cross tells the tale of a small town of happy little bakers driven to terrorism by the greed of their leader and cake-hungry fat cats, resulting in the town's ultimate destruction. In an interview with Slow Decade, Cross explains that he got the idea for the film in 2003 in light of speculation that Iraq was buying uranium powder called yellow cake. Photograph from cakespy on Flickr At first glance, I thought Jessie Oleson of Cakespy made a cake-topped version of candy salad, but it's a cake on top of a real salad—and the cake batter contains mayonnaise. Are you cringing? Jessie says this: If you're disgusted by this cake but you're one of the many who indulged in bacon-flavored baked goods in the past year, you take a long look at yourself in the mirror before you judge the mayo cake. Because what makes up mayonnaise—egg yolks, oil, vinegar—is all stuff that would go into a cake anyway. She said it was "the most dense, moist, rich cake we've ever made." Sounds good to me! Even if you don't like percentages and figures, the financial crisis has caused everyone to be a little more aware of numbers. Lucky for us, the idea of number-crunching can be converted to chocolate-munching. Tina Roth Eisenberg of the blog Swiss Miss, clued us in to Mary & Matt's chocolate pie chart. At five and a half ounces, the chocolate breakdown works to, 70 percent milk, 20 percent dark, and 10 percent white. How do you like those numbers? I just wish there were something like this when I was studying the math section for the GREs, I am sure my score would have been higher....

Do parentheses and quotes somehow cancel each other out? Seems a bit superfluous for this cake baker to go through all that punctuation trouble. Couldn't the extra icing have gone to a better cause? Like a few quote, unquote rings? (What the cake order form was probably requesting in the first place.) [via amanda0730]...

Not sure what type of birthday cake to get the Tom Selleck fan in your life? And you're fine with staring at multiple photos of him shirtless for the cause? Blogger Alicia of Alicia Poicia realized that only this gooey chocolate toffee cake could rival Selleck himself. And only chocolate sprinkles could rival actual chest hair. (The pink flowers were also a nice touch.) "I have never made a cake that was so well received and complimented...and my friend truly did have and happy (and hairy) birthday." Emma is one lucky lady. At first I was drawn to Erin Nichols' mojito pound cake because of the way the mint leaves were embedded in the creamy frosting (besides that it looks like something I want in my mouth right now), but then I liked it even more when I realized that it kind of resembled a Pac-Man about to devour a slice of cake. Go to Erin's blog, Erin Cooks, to try the recipe, originally from CakeLove: How to Bake Cakes from Scratch by Warren Brown. Brass knuckles don't seem like the right topic for Serious Eats. But cupcake knuckles? Yes, please. There's not enough cupcake tats out there on otherwise bland fingers, which is why we love this framed cross-stitch, available on Etsy by seller citydown. She is the same woman responsible for stitching another embroidered essential which displays the wise proverb: Cake is the New Black. [via Craftzine]...

Ben & Jerry's released
Cake Batter ice cream. The flavor, which is a mixture of vanilla ice cream, yellow cake batter, and chocolate frosting, joins the ranks of more than 200 others the company has produced over the past three decades. From the simple to the sensational, there's no denying that Ben & Jerry's makes some great scoops. But I must admit, while I love ice cream, cake, and ice cream cake, I'm not a fan of cake ice cream. Are you?
