Must Wash Hands, Restaurant Bathroom Signage Blog

Must Wash Hands, a photo blog documenting "employees must" signs in restaurant loos. I heard once that the proper amount of hand-washing time was however long it took you to sing "Happy Birthday." Let's all not sing that aloud in the can, though. [via Eat Me Daily]...

Cool Blog Alert: 'Second Rate Snacks'

I love the idea of this blog—comparing a popular foodstuff to a similar but (sometimes) lesser-loved version. With voting for the superior snack. On that note, when am I getting my Hostess Pie?...

The so-called Oscars of the Food World will now accept nominations for blogs: "The Journalism Awards program has established a new James Beard Foundation Award for Blogs focusing on Food, Restaurants, Beverage, or Nutrition." It's not like web entities had been barred from entering, but its nice to see the foundation tip its hat explicitly to the impact blogs have had on the food world. Enter here, bloggers! My Head Is Going to Explode: NYT Links to WSJ

Last week, the New York Times' Dining section semi-officially became a blog, and now, they're actually blogging: a post on the Diner's Journal, Possible Food Price Fixing, directly links to a story from the Wall Street Journal....

Another Day, Another Meme: 100 Japanese Foods to Try

Yesterday I did the 100 Chinese Foods meme and mentioned that I'd check in today with the 100 Japanese Foods to Try meme. Here it is. This one was started by Maki Itoh on her blog Just Hungry. The idea, again, is to copy and paste the list into your own site, bolding the items you've tried. The interesting thing about Maki's list is that it goes way beyond the Japanese foods we know and love in the West. Sushi, sashimi, and noodles barely make an appearance here. It's a real eye opener. My list appears after the jump. It seems the other folks here at SE are burnt out on 100 foods memes. Maybe they'll chime in in the...

Another Meme: The 100 Chinese Foods to Try Before You Die

OK. Memes are spawning memes are spawning memes. It's like an experiment gone out of control. Mutations are rampant, and they're spreading like viruses. You remember The Omnivore's 100, right? Then there was The Traveling Omnivore's 20. Then the 10 Texas Sausages to Eat Before You Die. Now, the blog Appetite for China has birthed The 100 Chinese Foods to Eat Before You Die. The rules are similar to Omnivore's 100: Copy the list, paste it into your own blog, and bold all the foods you've had. There's also a 100 Japanese Foods to Try list, but I'm saving that post for tomorrow. My Chinese list, after the jump....

Blogging His Life at the CIA (Culinary Institute of America)

Chefs at culinary schools have gotten a bad rep. We tend to think of them as talented but downright terrifying, exactly the way Jonathan Dixon portrays them in his new blog, 19 Months. Dixon just started cooking school at the CIA, and in his second post he writes about trying to de-bone a fish while an angry instructor looms over his shoulder: When this guy cuts a fish, the flesh seems to just swim away from its body. The bones and ribs are bare, and you can hear a chorus of mermaids and sirens singing through the mists. He stared me down. He was about six inches from me; I could feel either heat or hostility radiating off of him....
