Dinner Tonight: Caramelized Pork Banh Mi (via Food52)

A Vietnamese sandwich shop classic, tender pork gets marinated in a sweet fish sauce-based marinade before being quick-grilled and stuffed into a sandwich with jalapeño peppers, pickled carrots and daikon radish, and cilantro. Personally, I'd also stick in a fat stick of cucumber for its fresh crunch. This recipe works fine in crisp French bread, but if you can find a real banh mi-style rice flour baguette, all the better. Sandwich a Day: Hoi An Meatball Sandwich at Out the Door, San Francisco

This almost-banh-mi has many of the same trappings as the popular Vietnamese sandwich we know and love. The juicy pork meatballs on this Hoi An Meatball Sandwich ($8.50) pack a lot of flavor. The meat has a pronounced porkiness as well as an unexpected crunch from diced jicama. The meatballs are simmered in tomato sauce which lends a little heat as well as the addictive stink of fish sauce. More

We Tried Everything at Chipotle's New ShopHouse Southeast Asian Kitchen in D.C.

There's been a lot of buzz around town surrounding the opening of Chipotle's new Southeast Asia-inspired ShopHouse, despite the company's best efforts to keep it under wraps. I put my math-minded friend in charge of ordering to make sure we got every ingredient in every category in at least one bowl and banh mi. More

A few months ago I threw out the idea that Mei Sum Inc. in Boston's Chinatown makes one of the best bánh mì around. Some of you agreed, and some of you weren't shy about telling me I was dead wrong. In an effort to start it up all over again, I'm going to put myself out there and say that my other favorite bánh mì is the grilled pork sandwich from Pho Viet in Allston's Super 88 food court. Here's my case. More

Rant: What The New York Times Doesn't Know About Bánh Mì

Ok, so I'm gonna pull an Adam and pull out the Truth Hammer for this one. Pardon me as I sputter indignantly in public for a moment. Was anyone else flabbergasted at the appalling lack of reporting, knowledge, and taste displayed in New York Times writer Jordan Michelman's recent article about bánh mì modestly titled "Banh Mi In America"? Reading through it the other night, I was so shocked at the level of ignorance and the misinformation displayed that I was compelled to shoot off an email to Chichi, Robyn, and Tam just to vent. Never mind that his choices for best bánh mì in the country are... puzzling (you don't have to take my word for it: OC... More
