Portrait of Obama Made Out of Cereal

Photographs from Amy Cheng "Breakfast of Champions" by artists Hank Willis Thomas and Ryan Alexiev is a portrait of President Barack Obama made out of cereal: The sugary sweet mosaic, made of thousands of cereal bits, depicts idea of what a healthily balanced breakfast (democracy) might look like when considering the role that marketing plays in myth building around corporate and political brands. The portrait appeared at The Armory Show in New York City this past weekend. You can buy a print of the portrait from Cerealart.com. Check out more cereal art at ryanalexiev.com. A closer look, after the jump....

Washington Post's 2009 Peeps Diorama Contest Now Accepting Entries

Last year's winner, "The Tomb of King Peepankhamun." Some would argue that Peeps are edible, others would say they're perfect objects for arts and craft projects. Behold the Washington Post’s Third Annual Peeps Diorama Contest, now accepting entries. The diorama should encapsulate a famous event or concept, whether past, present, or future. Judging by the last two years, timely is good, but not too predictable (SlumPeep Millionaire could be overblown). Since it's judged by the D.C.-area hometown paper, any D.C. references are good. Punny titles are also appreciated. Though the contest is open to anyone in the U.S., the five finalists must reside in D.C., Maryland, or Virginia. Photo submissions are due by 11:59 p.m. March 15; send in...

A Waitress Sketches Her Clientele

Artist Anna Magnowska may be taking down your order, but she's also noting your facial contortions and talk bubbles. "Check this ring out...that would cost a year's wages for you! See what you get if you find yourself a rich man (another glass of bubbly please)." Tipsy/well-fed people say the darnedest things. Her series of sketches reminds me of the HBO hidden-camera series Taxicab Confessions. [via Made in England]...

Food Art by Julie Rothhahn

"Pâtadoigts" and "Cartes à manger". French culinary designer Julie Rothhahn makes interactive, edible objects out of food. My favorites are her emotive thimble-like "pasta fingers" and her connectable cookies. She also has a series of photo illustrations that focuses on animals as food, like snails made out of garlic and parsley butter. Grinning Bowls of Oatmeal

Do anthropomorphic bowls of oatmeal give you great joy or nightmares? J. Anzalone of the blog Paintbox shares her smiling oatmeal art. If they start talking, then we should probably have a separate conversation. Food Autopsy Photos by Kathryn Parker Almanas

Photographer Kathryn Parker Almanas has a sort of medical, laboratorial style of food photography. Her shots of day-old danishes and French macarons appear in test tubes, sterile plastic bags, and shrouded with gauze. They are pretty spectacular, in a twisted necropsy kind of way. [via Feature Shoot]...

Sculptures Made from Gummi Bears

Taiwanese artist YaYa Chou has a thing for making sculptures out of gummi bears. Her gummi bear rug, gummi bear ram, and gummi bear chandelier are just a few selections from her Gummi Bear Series. On her website she explains that by constructing luxury items out of a children's snack, she aims to explore "the relationship between food consumption and class." Photo of the Day: Gerrit's Satellite Wafers

I love the retro illustration on this box of Gerrit's Satellite Wafers, even if I have no idea what's going on. Snow capped mountains? Check. Giant tongue-wagging sun? Check. And...is that a crown peeking out from behind the satellite wafers? Uh. What? Okay. I could've owned this lovely box for just $9.95 from Economy Candy, my favorite candy store in New York City, but as I find Satellite Wafers to be one of the most pointless candies I've ever eaten, I couldn't do it. But if you like eating flavorless styrofoam-like wafers filled with 5% sour powder and 95% air, then go for it....
