Obama Orders Pizza from Dom DeMarco's

Slice Adam Kuban 1 comment

This nation—at least half of it—always seems fascinated with what our presidents eat and where. Nattering nabobs like to pick apart their ordering options. Haters like to say, "Who cares?" We've had the opportunity to highlight President Obama and the First Lady's numerous burger runs, but it's rare he does pizza. On that note, did you see that the prez ordered a dozen pizzas and cannoli from Dom DeMarco's Pizzeria in Las Vegas? More

Daily Slice: D.O.C.G. Enoteca, Las Vegas

Slice Kelly Bone 2 comments

Few people come to Las Vegas specifically for the pizza. Fortunately the city is dotted with reputable pies such as Grimaldi's, Dom DeMarco's and the VPN kitchen of Settebello. But when craveing a Neopolitian-style pizzaon The Strip, the options dwindle down to just one: D.O.C.G. at the Cosmopolitan. More

Behind the Scenes at a Las Vegas Pastry Kitchen

Sweets Katie Robbins 2 comments

As any experienced buffet aficionado knows, you've got to have a strategy when it comes to bellying up to an all-you-can-eat smorgasbord. Pacing, planning, and clear priorities are all key characteristics of the serious buffet diner. And as I learned recently while visiting the pastry kitchen for the Wicked Spoon Buffet at the new Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas, a similar philosophy is essential behind-the-scenes as well. When serving between 2,000 and 3,300 people per day, strategy is the name of the game. More

A Sandwich a Day: Captain Hook at Holsteins in Las Vegas

A Sandwich a Day Katie Robbins 1 comment

Part burger, part Filet-o-Fish, with a bagel and lox thrown in for good measure, the Captain Hook ($15.50) at Holsteins in Las Vegas is one hulking hybrid of a sandwich. Grilled Atlantic salmon (best ordered medium rare for ultimate buttery richness), dressed with crisp frisée, tangy pickled shallots, and a creamy caper-herb mayonnaise that's just this side of tartar sauce, in all the right ways. In Vegas, more is always better, so the salmon fillet is then topped with a really generous slab of house-cured gravlax. More

The Best in the West: A Rib Sampler

Joshua Bousel 9 comments

The Best in the West: Nugget Rib Cook-off in Sparks, Nevada, spans over six days, but I only had one. So I came up with a strategy: seek out the best ribs of the 24 pitmasters based on the pros' recommendations, and eat no more than two from each team. Lots of saucy, fall-off-the-bone tastiness ensued. More

The Best in the West: Nugget Rib Cook-off in Sparks, Nevada

Joshua Bousel 2 comments

"Pitmasters here represent the entire nation." [Photographs: Joshua Bousel] I had the most perfect Labor Day planned, a lazy afternoon next to the smoker filled with pork, some beers, and close friends. That was until I received an invitation to visit the The Best in the West: Nugget Rib Cook-off in Nevada. After a second pause contemplating whether I wanted to alter my ideal holiday, I thought better of my reservations, and before I knew it, I was on a plane headed for a weekend of pure barbecue bliss. If you're an East Coaster like myself, the Nugget Rib Cook-off may not sound familiar, but for the pitmasters and attendees alike, it's the biggest event of the year. The six-day... More

Las Vegas: Grimaldi's Coal Brick Oven Pizza

Slice L.A. Pizza Maven 25 comments

"Pools of white mozzarella swam in a sea of ruby sauce on one side, while chunks of sweet, fennel sausage seemed to dance on the other half." Grimaldi's Coal Brick Oven Pizza 9595 S. Ranking the Nation's Ramen

Erin Zimmer 1 comment

Rameniac, one of the premier noodle blogs, has revealed its 2009 King of the Bowl ramen ratings, with lists for Las Vegas, Seattle, Los Angeles, and New York City. In Los Angeles, the noodle scene was largely static, "save for the opening of one or two sub-par shops." Seattle was all about tonkotsu (a specific type of ramen). "Had Kurt Cobain slurped down a few Samurai Armor Plates (from Seattle's Samurai Noodle) during his lifetime, grunge might have never happened." Vegas is more famous for "99¢ buffets and Lance Burton at the Monte Carlo," but there are three ramen spots worth noting. And then there's New York. Fresh off the Japanese airlines, the heaviest hitters go straight to this... More
