Hot Dog of the Week: Danish Hot Dog

"The signature of the Danish Hot Dog is the mountain of crispy fried onions—pretty much exactly like the canned French fried onions." [Original artwork: Hawk Krall] Past Weeks' Dogs 24th & Passyunk TruckTexas TommyPhilly Dirty Water DogChicago Dog This week marks the first Hot Dog of the Week outside of North America. Unique hot dog styles are evolving on every corner of the planet. Brazil alone has three or four unique styles. Japan probably invented four new hot dogs while I wrote this article. European hot dog variations are extra fascinating because the dogs themselves are closer to the original German wieners, yet many of the serving styles and toppings are influenced by American hot dog variations. I was thrilled...

Things I Ate in Milwaukee

I visited Milwaukee over the weekend under less-than-ideal circumstances. My paternal grandmother passed away last week, and I was in town to attend the funeral. While there, I visited relatives who are, thankfully, still with us and who I hope will be for a long time yet to come. Because Milwaukee is a great food town and most of us take comfort in food in stressful times, I ended up visiting some of the city's iconic food landmarks with friends and family for some measure of solace. I'm glossing over them here before I forget where I went. These aren't really full-on "reviews"; eating wasn't the point of this trip. Friday I like to visit George Webb immediately after...

Woman Finds Cell Phone in Bag of Potato Chips

“I will never, ever eat chips out of a bag again. They will be dumped in the bowl.” It's safe to drool. These aren't the chips in question. Emma Schweiger of Janesville, Wisconsin, found a Nokia cell phone in a bag Clancy's Ripple Chips she bought from her local Aldi's. The phone wouldn't turn on, Schweiger told the Janesville Gazette, so we're assuming she didn't call its owner and put to rest the question that surely everyone must be asking: How did it get in there? It did have a "discolored circle" on the back "as if it was once connected to a belt clip." [via Engadget]...

In Videos: The Whole Hog Project

A year and a half ago, Mike Sula of the Chicago Reader embarked on a project. The Whole Hog Project would follow three mulefoot pigs (Edna, Erma, and Endive) from birth (on a Wisconsin farm) to death (at a slaughterhouse) to an afterlife (at Chicago's Blackbird restaurant). The hairy oinkers, known for having uncloven hooves like mules, would be spotlighted in a fancy six-course dinner. "I've never seen my food walking around before," his friend and and videographer throughout the project, Mike Gebert of Sky Full of Bacon, admitted. Why were they putting themselves through this? Mulefoot pigs are an endangered American breed that, two years ago, only had 200 to their name. While eating an endangered animal seems...

Cooking with Kids: Bacon Doughnuts

Photograph by Matthew Amster-Burton See these awesome maple-bacon doughnuts I made? I actually can’t take any credit for them. The idea came from Voodoo Doughnuts in Portland, Oregon, where they serve a maple bar with bacon strips on top. The idea of doing it at my house, with bacon sprinkles, came from Dana Cree, the talented pastry chef at Poppy in Seattle. The raised doughnut recipe is from Baking Illustrated, which comes from the editors at Cooks Illustrated. Making raised doughnuts at home sounds like a major undertaking, but it’s not. All you need is a lot of hungry people to eat them, because one batch of dough makes a lot of doughnuts, and you don’t want to waste...

No More Bar Cars on Chicago's Metra Lines

As contracts with "refreshment car" vendors run out (the last one expires Friday), the regional rail network has chosen not to renew them: "The commuter rail line has decided to shut down its rolling taverns, ending an era that hearkens back to the days when executives in gray flannel suits climbed aboard club cars and lubricated the journey home with martinis."...
