A Sandwich a Day: Antipasto Focaccia at People's Food Co-op in La Crosse, WI

The Antipasto focaccia panini from the People's Food Co-op deli in La Crosse, Wisconsin, is so much more than "vegetarian panini" would you have you think. It's packed with vegetables and chips are included in the $4.95 price (you could get carrots but we're talking kettle-cooked chips here!). Punchy sun-dried tomatoes, sliced cucumbers, provolone cheese, red onion, salad greens and pepperoncinis on Asiago focaccia bread that's spread with pesto.

Hot Dog of the Week: Grilling the Catalana and Shabeergan Brats from Gilbert's Sausages

Two weeks ago I tried out the delicious all-beef Froman hot dogs from Gilbert's Craft Sausages in Wisconsin, and with Memorial Day right around the corner I thought I'd give some of their other sausages a try on the grill. Gilbert's is a new company that strikes a great balance between modern and traditional with some really delicious high-quality, all-natural uncured dogs and sausages.

It's Super Bowl time, and at Serious Eats, that means the same showdown we do every year: which team wins for the best food city? Super Bowl: Who Wins for Best Food City?

Oh yes, it's that time of year again. Many of us are completely absorbed by the NFL playoffs. It's easy to find sports sites and portals to discuss the football aspects of the match-ups—but when you pit these cities against each other, which have the superior food scenes? We're serious eaters, so we need a forum to discuss the merits of each city as a food lover's destination. Here we go.

Kenosha, Wisconsin: The Garbage Plate at Franks Diner

Franks Diner has always been a bit of a local sensation. When the prefab railcar-style establishment was pulled into Kenosha, Wisconsin, in 1926 by a team of horses, townsfolk lined the streets to watch. These days it's emerged into the national spotlight, with appearances on Guy Fieri's shows and Nightline and now ... on the pages of Serious Eats!

Culinary Ambassadors: Grocery Shopping in Wisconsin

Our shopping priorities go: local and organic (CSA, co-op, farmers' market), then local (farmers' market and Woodman's), then just organic (co-op and Woodman's). However, there are things (like bananas) that I do not buy from any of the above categories. When I lay it out like this, it sounds like a lot of work, but I actually enjoy the challenge of finding foods that align with our philosophy and taste great but don't drain our bank account.

Market Scene: Dane County Farmers' Market in Madison, Wisconsin

Every Saturday morning from mid-April until the first week of November, Wisconsin farmers gather around the capitol building in Madison for the Dane County Farmers' Market, the largest producer-only farmers' market in the United States. The place is packed with eager buyers every week and is so successful that there is a four-year waiting list for farmers trying to get in.

Hot Dog of the Week: Danish Hot Dog

"The signature of the Danish Hot Dog is the mountain of crispy fried onions—pretty much exactly like the canned French fried onions." [Original artwork: Hawk Krall] Past Weeks' Dogs 24th & Passyunk TruckTexas TommyPhilly Dirty Water DogChicago Dog This week marks the first Hot Dog of the Week outside of North America. Unique hot dog styles are evolving on every corner of the planet. Brazil alone has three or four unique styles. Japan probably invented four new hot dogs while I wrote this article. European hot dog variations are extra fascinating because the dogs themselves are closer to the original German wieners, yet many of the serving styles and toppings are influenced by American hot dog variations. I was thrilled...

Things I Ate in Milwaukee

I visited Milwaukee over the weekend under less-than-ideal circumstances. My paternal grandmother passed away last week, and I was in town to attend the funeral. While there, I visited relatives who are, thankfully, still with us and who I hope will be for a long time yet to come. Because Milwaukee is a great food town and most of us take comfort in food in stressful times, I ended up visiting some of the city's iconic food landmarks with friends and family for some measure of solace. I'm glossing over them here before I forget where I went. These aren't really full-on "reviews"; eating wasn't the point of this trip. Friday I like to visit George Webb immediately after...
