More than 70 of Chicago's top chefs and restaurants come together in Navy Pier's Grand Ballroom to help support Share Our Strength's mission to end childhood hunger.
'Taste of the Nation' on Serious Eats
Toward the end of last night's Taste of the Nation event, we overheard an industry insider declare that the shaken and stirred cocktails trumped the plates we all gobbled up. As a team who conquered our fair share of sampling both, we had to agree that it was a tough call.
Last night saw 82 Mercer packed with a huge food event for a good cause, and 59 restaurants came together with bartenders and wine purveyors for Taste of the Nation, benefiting Share Our Strength's "No Kid Hungry." Chefs Marc Murphy, George Mendes, Matt Lightner, Missy Robbins, and the like brought their A-games, and we stayed far later feasting and enjoying than we'd intended to. Here are the details of the 30 bites we savored.
Octopus was the popular protein of choice at Taste of the Nation on Sunday in Los Angeles, while creamy custards dominated desserts, and cocktails tended toward gin and mint combos and beer floats. Check out everything we tried! All 33 bites and sips.
Even after all the savory dishes, the sweets at Taste of the Nation demanded our attention. Though spring rhubarb was a recurring theme, the stars were two non-rhubarb offerings: Telepan's incredibly delicate milk chocolate peanut buttermousse cake and Aquavit's blueberry soup with yogurt foam and egg made from goat cheese parfait with a sea buckthorn yolk.
Monday's New York edition of Taste of the Nation proved to be an epic meal. The highlights among the savory dishes included an insanely rich Spanish mackerel crudo from the Union Square Cafe, a cup of creamy stracciatella with sea urchin, caviar, and nasturtium granita from Roberta's, and a suckling pig croqueta from Bar Basque that came with a dropper of salsa verde and a slow cooked quail egg.
When mixologists from Employees Only, Gramercy Park Hotel, Pegu Club, Vandaag, 1534, and Death & Co. (plus many others) are on hand shaking up cocktails, you know you're going to drink well. (Perhaps too well for a Monday night.)
Or, 'Pig Out to Feed Hungry People' Hunger relief organization Share Our Strength's annual Taste of the Nation New York City benefit is this Wednesday, May 14, at the Roseland Ballroom. SOS is a terrific organization that supports hunger-relief efforts...
