A few highlighted examples of innovative pizza box design, excerpted from Scott Wiener's book, Viva La Pizza!.
'ScottWiener' on Serious Eats
The pizza box. A utilitarian cardboard device designed to get pies to our doors in one piece, while keeping them as hot as possible. In our day-to-day experience of them, rarely do we consider them a blank canvas; luckily for us, Scott Wiener...does.
Back in January, we told you that Scott Wiener was hiring new guides for his famed NYC pizza tours. Looks like we're not the only ones whose interest was piqued by his job posting. Scott Rogowsky, of the Running Late Show, swung by for a couple of interviews of his own...and let's just say he has his work cut out for him. Come check out the Scott-on-Scott pizza action!
Spotted on Craigslist, Scott's Pizza Tours in NYC is hiring. For all those New York pizza buffs, this may be the gig you need to make all that cheesy, saucy knowledge work for you.
We're excited to let you know that Scott Wiener of Scott's Pizza Tours is once again putting together the annual Slice Out Hunger charity event. Proceeds go to City Harvest. Tokens are sold at the door and cost $1, each one redeemable for any one of a slice of pizza, a Fizzy Lizzy soda, or a raffle ticket. And we're equally excited to let you know that Serious Eats will be a part of the event this year —we'll be there volunteering, donating items for the raffle, and eating a few slices, of course!
This week's My Pie Monday is a special edition featuring some of the craziest pies that your fellow Slice'rs created in 2011. The pies that arrive in the Slice mailbox each week are a source of constant inspiration. There's a lot of personality that comes through in the various styles and toppings. Here we have some of the wackiest ones to pass through the galleries this year! We'll be back to our regular MPM schedule as of next week. Look for any pies submitted between the 16th and 29th of December to appear in a deluxe New Year's post then....
How do you get a two ton plus imported Italian WFO oven into a Brooklyn brownstone? With a crane of course. Scott Wiener covers the details on the hoist of Neapolitan newcomer Sottocasa's oven over a three story building and into it's new home outside the building.
If you're in NYC and still searching for the perfect way to celebrate National Pizza Month, then check out these upcoming events hosted by our man Scott Wiener.
There's a lot to know about tomatoes. Remember how much Scott Wiener had to say about them just in his post on the San Marzanos alone? There was lots of myth busting going on there, but if you want to hear more from him on the topic of this enigmatic fruit, then you need to get your tomato loving self to the Brooklyn Brainery tonight. Scott will be giving a talk and conducting a tasting in a class that goes from 7:00-8:30pm. Tickets are $15 at the door.
Welcome back to My Pie Monday, Slice'rs! We've got some good lookin' pies in this week's line-up. Lacey Muszynski and Pizzablogger create a square pie double feature with a cameo by Paulie Gee's secret tomatoes. Norma427 works a little Mexican manteca into her dough and dhorst gives her Za'atar Zucchini topped pie a pretzel salt crust. Plus we have a pizza topped with foraged morels from Cary, clams casino from sunra, a beauty of a NY style pie by Ev, Wucactus1 creates a classic Margherita, Climbhighak makes an Italian meat pizza, and ScottWiener gives his mom the best Mother's Day present of all.
Scott Wiener (Scott's Pizza Tours) emails us that he's once again putting together the annual Slice Out Hunger charity event. Proceeds go to City Harvest. Tickets are sold at the door and cost $1, each one redeemable for any one of a slice of pizza, a soda, or a raffle ticket. (Obviously you can buy more than one ticket if you're hungry and thirsty and feeling lucky.)
Oh, I feel for our Jewish friends out there who are observing Passover, which started Monday night at sundown. No leavened bread for seven days? That means no pizza. Oy gevalt! ... Or does it?
I love this video by Scott "Pizza Tours" Wiener. Even though it's pretty long by web-video standards, I wanted to see more pizza boxes from around the world. Scott's got a pretty vast collection. I don't know where he keeps them all. ... Oh, wait: I do!
(Can I play yenta here? Scott, meet Shirley Chow.)
If you're ever at a loss for what to put on your homemade pizza, this is the place to be. This week for My Pie Monday, we've got a California Club pizza with avocados, chicken, and bacon (yum!), a langoustine-topped pie, and a pizza topped with smoked jalapenos, and lots more!
We've got a little good-weather wood-fired action from Norma427, a luscious broiler Margherita from Damian, a wee baby pizza from Scott Wiener of Scott's Pizza Tours, and more awesome pies from dhorst, LinebackerU, Scott D, Il Cornicione, Mmmph, James S., Olsonmatt, and ESNY1007. Check 'em all out in the slideshow!
If you've followed Slice for any length of time, you've met Jason Feirman and Scott Wiener. Jason runs I Dream of Pizza, and Scott runs Scott's New York Pizza Tours. These two friends of Slice went on a spectacular-looking pilgrimage to Naples recently, visiting all the storied pizzerias and some cool pizza-related spots like a water buffalo farm and cheesemaking facility. Jason's got his recaps here: http://www.idreamofpizza.com/search/label/naples/ Go check 'em out. They're phenomenal.
