For only a few dollars more than the standard egg and cheese, you'll get tender egg, creamy ricotta, and a crust of gruyere shellacked to the bread like one giant cheesy crisp.
'Queens Kickshaw' on Serious Eats
The Queens Kickshaw in Astoria offers a plate of three football-shaped croquettes with a cabbage filling that tastes a little Eastern European and a little...egg roll?
In honor of the greatness that is melted cheese, we've looked back on some of our favorite New York Grilled Cheeses. Whether it's a nutty French affair paired with a fancy jam, or simply white bread hugging American slices next to a bowl of tomato soup, grilled cheese is the best, and these are the best of the best.
Though it's only a year old, the Queens Kickshaw has already become a neighborhood staple for Astorians with a yen for great sandwiches and coffee. The local owners, the husband and wife team Ben Sandler and Jennifer Lim, took some time to share their neighborhood favorites with us, proving there's a lot more to Astoria than just Greek gyros.
Queens Kickshaw, centrally located in Astoria right off the bustling intersection of Broadway and Steinway Street, has become a neighborhood destination. Its coffee program may be among the best in the borough, but the grilled cheese sandwiches and other savory bites are my big draw. At its worst, the food at Queens Kickshaw is very good. When the grilled cheese stars align and you order from the strong sides of the menu, it's superb.
It's no great surprise to find a thoughtful, delicious coffee enterprise in bustling Astoria—it's just a surprise it's taken this long. The Queens Kickshaw's got the goods and then some.
