A Sandwich a Day: Porchetta at The People's Pig in Portland, OR

Making a lunchtime decision amidst the food courts corralled on Alder Street is no easy task. One of Portland's largest pods, you can try anything from Ethiopian dora watt to Peruvian lomo salt ado. But your nose might lead you to the unmistakably porky scent wafting from The People's Pig, which specializes in sandwiches made from its namesake animal. And your eyes need skim no farther than the top of the menu: porchetta ($8). More

A Sandwich a Day: Torta Ahogada from Mextiza in Portland, OR

Mextiza is a newish Mexican restaurant in Portland that has a popular older sibling, Autentica. Mextiza offers over 60 brands of tequila, and dishes that are indigenous to the many regions of chef Oswaldo Bibiano's native Mexico including Toluca, Sinaloa, and Hidalgo, among others. The sandwich highlight is the Torta Ahogado, slowly cooked sliced beef that's simmered in a red sauce and served with refried beans, onions and thinly sliced radish. More

The Search for America's Best Tacos: West Coast Contenders

Traveling all over this great nation of ours to taquerias, taco trucks, carnicerias, and anywhere else serving up a serious taco, we narrowed down the national list to 64 contenders divided by region: West, South, Midwest, and East. After much discussion, quite a few intense roadtrips, and a little indigestion, we arrived at our favorites. Up first: the West coast division, from the deep-fried fish tacos of the Southern California coast to the taco trucks in the Bay Area, and all the way up to Washington state. More

A Sandwich a Day: Falafel from Barbur World Foods Market in Portland, OR

This international market, with a specialty in Middle Eastern foods, is one of my favorite places to shop in Portland. The variety of foods, beer, and wine is great, plus the prices are reasonable. It's owned by Myrna and John Attar, who are the same people behind the terrific Lebanese restaurant Ya Hala, so you can also expect fresh prepared foods from the deli counter: hummus, baba ghanouj, tabouli, and roasted lamb on basmati rice, and freshly baked pita for this falafel. Miyake: World-Class Sushi in Portland, Maine

The original location that Miyake opened in Portland's west end in 2007 might have been considered a hole in the wall: It was small, kinda cramped, and (at the time) a ways off the beaten path of most of the city's gourmet eateries. Since then he's moved across town to a bigger, much swankier space, but the restaurant's main draw, the omakase deals, are as impressive—and as reasonably priced—as ever. More

Portland, ME: Getting My Ramen Fix at Pai Men Miyake

Ever since the charter issue of Lucky Peach hit newsstands, I've been making myself a promise: This is the weekend I'm going to make ramen. Unfortunately, I've been saying that for months now, but not because my noodle soup craving has subsided. Not in the least. It's just that this place, Masa Miyake's noodle shop called Pai Men Miyake, has been feeding me so well that procrastination has become a delicious habit. More
