Photo of the Day: The Peep Liberation Front

Photograph by Comrade Bo After being microwaved, decapitated, and stored in drawers for stale-ification, the Peeps have had it. Seriously. They are pulling out the toothpick-et signs and taking it to the streets. This photo was submitted by the anonymous Peep Liberation Front (PLF), who feels especially connected to the movement. Look, the squishy brigade recognizes that being eaten is their destiny, but can they at least die with some respect?...

How to Make Chocolate-Covered Peepsicles

Peeps wands for everyone! Making Peeptastic crafts for Peeps Week is a lot more fun than eating them. I'll admit I'm not a fan of Peeps by themselves, but skewered on a stick and covered in luxe chocolate and coconut? Definitely better than eating them plain. It's also not a bad way to go if you're going to die a Peepy death. These Peepsicles use the stepsister of the Peeps family—the bunnies. Chocolate mousse bunnies to be exact; although after tasting them I don't know if there's anything mousse-like about them. The only skewer type items in the Serious Eats kitchenette were 12 inches long and so up the bunnies' butts they went. That and the crackle of the...

Making Peeps from Scratch: Interview with Chef Brian Robinson

Homemade Peeps (and a flamingo and shark for good measure) at Restaurant 3 If you took a nap, worked-out twice, built a hospital, and still had all the time in the world, would you then consider making Peeps from scratch? It just doesn't seem like a priority list topper, but hey. Chef Brian Robinson of Restaurant 3 in Arlington, Virginia, went for it. All week until Easter Sunday, he's treating his dinner guests to the beady-eyed confection. We had a little chat with him. First thing's first: Why?! I always loved Peeps as a kid, but as an adult and chef, I just can’t get past all the random ingredients on the label. It's a marshmallow! Let’s leave it...

How to Make S'meeps: S'mores Plus Peeps

S'meeps? That's right, I went there. S'meeps are the Brangelina of the Peeps world. A classic treat (s'more/Brad Pitt) coupled with a sparkly chick (Peep/Jolie). This is a twist on the traditional s'more in honor of Peep Week and the glut of Peeps in stores everywhere. The s'meeps taste just like s'mores with an extra crunch of sugar and a happy dose of color. Consider making these as doing the rest of the world a favor. What's going to happen to all the Peeps that aren't bought and consumed/melted/frozen/mauled during the Easter season? Do they go to the old Peeps farm over in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania? Are they secretly plotting to take over the world in their Peeps lair? The...

Peeps Lip Balm, Reviewed

Peeps flavored lip balms do in fact exist. Available on Amazon for $3.99, or apparently in the Target $1 bins, they come in four different marshmallow cream flavors: grape, strawberry, vanilla, and cotton candy. The best part? None of these are even real Peeps flavors. We had to order one of the intriguing sticks. Peeps Lip Balm FAQ Does it taste like melted Peeps spread all over your lips? A little. Will the Peepsy flavor linger a couple hours later when you take a sip of water? Yes. Does it moisturize? Oh my gosh, yes. Were any Peeps killed in the process? No. The ingredients, after the jump....

Washington Post's 2009 Peeps Diorama Contest Now Accepting Entries

Last year's winner, "The Tomb of King Peepankhamun." Some would argue that Peeps are edible, others would say they're perfect objects for arts and craft projects. Behold the Washington Post’s Third Annual Peeps Diorama Contest, now accepting entries. The diorama should encapsulate a famous event or concept, whether past, present, or future. Judging by the last two years, timely is good, but not too predictable (SlumPeep Millionaire could be overblown). Since it's judged by the D.C.-area hometown paper, any D.C. references are good. Punny titles are also appreciated. Though the contest is open to anyone in the U.S., the five finalists must reside in D.C., Maryland, or Virginia. Photo submissions are due by 11:59 p.m. March 15; send in...

Sugar-Free Pumpkin Peeps, Not Worth the $2

As a Peeps hater, I don't approve of special edition Peeps, let alone the traditional Easter ones. But this has gone too far: Sugar-free Pumpkin Peeps, made with Splenda. Trying to create a "sugar-free" Peep is like attempting "vegetable-less" cabbage. Even if you're limited to a sugar-free diet, this is not worth it. Splenda may be 200 to 300 times sweeter than sugar, but this tastes like foam. A foamy mattress, to be exact. To make it worse, the set of three pumpkins was $1.99. Three orange, fat circles with nubs—bearing mattressy undertones—for two-bucks! And if you need one more reason to avoid this, the package says: EXCESSIVE CONSUMPTION MAY CAUSE STOMACH DISCOMFORT AND/OR A MILD LAXATIVE EFFECT. Do...

Sweet, Sweet Passover Plagues

Plague-themed Peeps, candy molds, and chocolates: they're perfect for Passover! The ten Passover Plagues in Exodus didn't involve much sugar or butter. If only Moses delivered G-d's demands in candy form, then those gnats and ticks could have been chocolate, not infectious insects! With Passover only three weeks away, here's a few candy homages to the anniversary of Egyptian calamities. Mmm, who wants a sugar high from boils and murrain?...
