In Season: Pears

Called the "gift of the gods" by epic poet Homer, the juicy and sweet flavors and the soft, somewhat grainy texture of the pear makes the fruit worthy of its heavenly title. Pear season in much of America runs from August to October, though it's available year-round due to the incredible amount of seasonal variations among its different varieties. As we glide though October, "optimal pear usage time" is coming to an end, though any time of year is a great time to whip up one of these pear-based dishes.

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 140: Can Dried Fruit Be Diet Food?

Lately I have taken to eating raisins and dried tart cherries as snacks. I normally eat lots of locally grown apples and pears this time of year, but for some reason my local markets, Fairway and Citarella, have had little or no local apples. What's up with that? It's apple and pear season in the Northeast, but not at these markets apparently. Normally I hit my local Greenmarkets on Saturday and/or Sunday, but I've been traveling most weekends for the book, so that hasn't been an option.

Serious Salad: Summer Pear Salad

I recently found out that Bartlett pears are coming into season, even though pears are often thought of as a winter fruit. I enjoyed having this pear salad with string beans, honey-roasted pecans, white (rather than my usual red) balsamic vinegar and a dash of black pepper. It's light enough that I can dare to have a bit of chocolate cake after with vanilla frosting.

Seriously Asian: Jumuk-Bap

Jumuk-Bap View the complete recipe here » What do seaweed, pears, and ground beef have in common? They all belong in Jumuk-bap, a Korean rice ball snack I learned how to make from a former Korean housemate. Jumuk means fist in Korean, which is a fair description of how compressed the rice becomes as you shape it into a ball. I'd always been more familiar with the Japanese version, onigiri, in which fillings like umeboshi (pickled plum) or salmon are tucked into the interior of a rice ball, which is then wrapped into a sheet of seaweed.
