'Midtown Lunch' on Serious Eats

Midtown Lunch Los Angeles and Philadelphia Are Also Awesome

It was tough to see Midtown Lunch poobah and Serious Eats buddy Zach Brooks leave New York City in January, but he's sure making us hungry over there on the West Coast with his pork belly banh mi and plantain-stuffed burrito reports on Midtown Lunch Los Angeles. (But there's no midtown in L.A., Zach!! Yeah, he doesn't care.) Also joining the ML family earlier this year was Midtown Lunch Philadelphia because, let's be honest, a man can only eat so many Wawa sandwiches. More

Fried Calamari Slice at Portobello's in Tribeca

[Photograph: Midtown Lunch] The folks at Midtown Lunch find a calamari-topped slice at Portobello's Pizzeria & Sicilian Kitchen in Tribeca: How can you go wrong with that? Admittedly, for some folks you can go quite, quite wrong with this but Portobello's does an awesome job of cooking it well. Squid and octopus, in my opinion, are two of the most difficult piece of seafood to make edible and for me. I am really not a calamari guy. But this? This was good. 'Kick-Ass' Artichoke Slice at Newly Opened Previti in Midtown

Zach Brooks of Midtown Lunch reports on the artichoke square slice at Previti: "Their artichoke pizza comes topped with a truffled spinach and cream sauce thing that they make in house every day. It also has real artichoke hearts (bonus!) unlike Artichoke in the East Village. It's basically the best of both worlds. You can get it as a regular slice, or as a square slice." [Credit: Midtown Lunch] Saag paneer is spinach and cheese, right? So why not make a saag paneer pizza? Midtown Lunch posted yesterday about the unusual pies at Bombay Eats on West 52nd Street. Right now, the Indian-food-topped pizza is sold whole-pie-only. The proprietor there told MTL's Zach Brooks that he didn't think there was enough demand to sell these pizzas by the slice. Zach badgered the owner enough that he made a slice topped with saag paneer from the buffet. He says: I still think he’d make a killing offering Indian pizza by the slice. Maybe if enough people... If You Don't Have Lunch Plans Yet ...

May we suggest visiting the Papa Perrone truck for an ersatz Rutgers grease truck "fat" sandwich? This possibly one-time-only meal (chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, fries, and sauce on a roll) is a response to Zach Brooks' Midtown Lunch Sandwich Challenge.... More
