[Map: Weather Sealed] In an attempt to find the most remote piece of wilderness in the lower 48 states, Stephen Von Worley of the blog Weather Sealed created this visualization that represents distances to the nearest McDonald's. Between the tiny Dakotan hamlets of Meadow and Glad Valley lies the McFarthest Spot: 107 miles distant from the nearest McDonald’s, as the crow flies, and 145 miles by car! [via Chris H.]...

[Photograph: Robyn Lee] Most deep-fried fish sandwiches from chain restaurants—including Denny's, Long John Silver's, and most certainly McDonald's—use hoki, a pretty ugly, bug-eyed fish found deep in the waters around New Zealand. But that may change, according to this New York Times piece. Drops in hoki spawn and damaged ecosystems have inspired the World Wildlife Fund to fight for reduced hoki fishing. In response, the New Zealand ministry has cut the allowable commercial catch quota from roughly 275,000 tons to 100,000 tons, which means McDonald's had to shrink its usual consumption of about 15 million pounds of hoki to 11 million pounds per year. "It could go up if the quota goes up," said McDonald's senior director of global...

Photograph from Tavallai on Flickr The magicians at fast-food chains come up with all sorts of edible creations—each one a little less likely than the last. The San Francisco Weekly lists ten of the world's weirdest, including the White Castle "chicken ring," a Tuna Pie (erk) at Jollibee in the Philippines, and Pita Snacks from Jack in the Box. But are these really the strangest ones out there? I think Domino's Bread Bowl Pasta definitely qualifies. The Taco Bell Crunchwrap Supreme, too. And there's always McD's—looking beyond our own borders, McDonald's in Hong Kong has served seaweed-flavored French fries; New Zealand, a Quarter Pounder topped with egg and beetroot; and in the Philippines, sweet tomato pasta with hot dogs...

Unfortunately, Consumer Reports only hits the big three—McDonald's, Burger King, and Wendy's. The two redheads get "very good" ratings while the King merely receives a "good," with CR saying what I've always thought about BK fries: "coating detracts from the quality and makes texture a little tough, not crispy."...

If you haven’t seen a McCafé commercial in the last few weeks, you haven’t turned on your television. McDonald’s $100 million marketing blitz was their biggest since the launch of the Egg McMuffin, back in the 1970s. And it seems to be paying off. According to the Boston Globe, McDonald’s is now the second-most preferred coffee brand in America—unseating Dunkin’ Donuts, and coming up behind Starbucks. But both Starbucks and Dunkin’ have cut prices and launched specials in response. What do you think? Have recent ads, product launches, and price cuts changed your morning coffee routine? Or are you set in your caffeinated ways?...

All That Klausner From the blog of comedy writer Julie Klausner: Easter is tantalizingly around the corner, quoth the candy aisles of Duane Reade (which has Whoppers Robin's Eggs) and Walgreen's (which has Milk Chocolate Praying Hands). But according to my friend Jocelyn, who has BEEN TO ENGLAND, our candy may as well be pushpins and gravel. Because across the pond, come Easter, the Brits are doing what they do all year round: making us Americans look like potato salad-shucking morons. Behold, the CADBURY CREME EGG McFLURRY. Of course, there's nothing stopping you from making your own Cadbury Creme Egg shake at home. [via Buzzfeed]...

This Recording Behold the cocktail that only the most ardent McDonald's lover would drink (and maybe not even then): The McNuggetini. Mix McDonald's chocolate milkshake with vanilla vodka and pour into a barbecue sauce-rimmed martini glass topped off with a McNugget. Classy! [via This Is Why You're Fat]...

You asked, we ate. I grabbed one of Dunkin' Donuts' new Waffle Breakfast Sandwiches and then a McDonald's McGriddle joint—DD's obvious inspiration—for comparison. First impression while placing both unwrapped sandwiches side by side: Looks like we're getting a bigger sandwich from Dunkin', I thought. But then we unwrapped them, after the jump....

New York Times: "As of November, the latest data available, the company had delivered 55 consecutive months of increases in global same-store sales. During a year when the stock market lost a third of its value—its worst performance since the Great Depression—shares of McDonald’s gained nearly 6 percent, making the company one of only two in the Dow Jones industrial average whose share price rose in 2008. (The other was Wal-Mart.)"...
