Behind the Scenes with an L.A. Food Trucker: A Day in the Life with The Manila Machine

There's nothing glamorous about running a food truck in Los Angeles. Nothing. Sure, there's much comfort in seeing our customers' satisfied grins after they've eaten and enjoyed Filipino food from The Manila Machine. But few people realize how much love and sacrifice goes into the day-to-day of operating L.A.'s first Filipino food truck. So here's a look at a typical day with me and The Manila Machine. More

Market Scene: Pick a Peck of Peppers in Hollywood

I've been running around this summer. A lot. So much that I feel as though I've been neglecting my friends at the Hollywood Farmers' Market (map). Tomas from Lily's Eggs. John from Sea Fever Seafood. Angel Orozco from Cafecito Organico and Zach Cox from Carmela Ice Cream, to name a few. These people have been part of my Sunday morning ritual for the past few years. They are my community. My church. So yesterday I drove over to Hollywood to get my friend fix, and picked up some great farmers' market info and, as always, delicious food, too. More

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 131: In Need of Helpful Travel Eating Tips

I'm getting ready to hit the road tomorrow for almost two weeks in California, and though I am certainly worried about the road's effects on my weight, I'm actually feeling reasonably OK about my chances of staying the course on my serious diet, but if any serious eaters out there have words of wisdom concerning road eating, now is the time to share them. Behind the Scenes with an L.A. Food Trucker: Manila Machine Filipino Food

I won't say there are no great Filipino restaurants here in the United States (there are) but they are few and far between. Even in Los Angeles of all places. Over the past few years, I've been attempting to unlock some of these mysteries by researching and writing about Filipino food on my blog, Burnt Lumpia. But in order to bring a greater awareness and appreciation of Filipino cuisine to the rest of the world, or at least to Southern California, I had to actually start a food truck. More

Market Scene: Summer at the Santa Monica Farmers' Market

My name is Leah and I am a summer fruit junkie. It's not easy to admit in this land of plenty, but from the moment strawberries first hit the farmers' market stands here in late February, I start jonesing for cherries, particularly the Raniers, which look like perfect miniature Fuji apples with their blushing skins. I imagine biting into peaches that look like they've come from outerspace and pluots that resemble apricots dipped in ink. At the Santa Monica farmers' market, I embraced my inner fruit junkie, and spent the rest of the time looking at garlic, shell beans, eggplant, and more. More

Searching for America's Best Yakitori

Since a trip to Japan years ago, I've searched high and low for authentic yakitori joints in the U.S., mostly to no avail. They should be simple little places, sheathed in wood paneling and coated in smoke resin, built up from years of nightly grilling. I love Biwa in Portland, and New York City's Totto empire, but even their happy hour prices can seem exorbitant. Still hoping for that true yakitori experience, this week I tried two "yaks" on a scouting trip to Los Angeles. More
