Struggling Chef on Last Night's 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent'

Last night's episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent ("Salome in Manhattan") featured a plot revolving around a young, once-hot chef struggling to make a comeback while biding his time as host of a morning cooking spot on a local TV station. His girlfriend (and socialite daughter of a possible investor) is murdered, and detectives Wheeler and Nichols* catch the case. While there wasn't as much cheffage as I would have liked (look to "Death Roe" [Season 4, Episode 15] for a more chef-heavy—and dark—episode), the show did feature enough NYC restaurant-world verisimilitude to entertain. There's the young chef whose first restaurant was critically acclaimed but financially doomed, thanks to a bumbling business partner. There's a hip-hop star turned... More

Tamara Tunie of 'L&O SVU' Eats Pizza

Grub Street's "New York Diet" series features Law & Order SVU's Tamara Tunie today. Tunie plays Dr. Melinda Warner, a medical examiner, on the show. I'm originally from Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Steelers were playing at four o'clock so we had to order a pizza, some Buffalo wings, and ginger ale. We watched football for the rest of the afternoon and evening. There's a fantastic place called Giovanni's on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx, and they deliver to Harlem and they have the best pizza. I'm not going to say the best pizza in New York, but it's really... More

This is one of our favorite posts, as it was the first entry of ours to be mentioned by major blog, thereby putting Slice on the radar. The episode of Law & Order filmed at the now-closed location of Joe's Pizza, on the corner of Bleecker and Carmine streets, aired last night. I was cat-sitting a friend's tabby and missed the show, but... More

Grimaldi's on 'Law & Order'

One of last night's reruns of Law & Order on TNT contained a Grimaldi's reference. In the episode "Tabula Rasa," detectives Curtis (Benjamin Bratt) and Briscoe (Jerry Orbach) are investigating a suspect who claims he's never been to New York before. After obtaining his credit-card receipts, they find he has visited Grimaldi's—alone, no less. Lieutenant Van Buren: [reading list of card charges] United Airlines, TKTS, Museum of Modern Art Bookstore, Barneys, Grimaldi's Italian Restaurant.Briscoe: Grimaldi's in Brooklyn?Van Buren: You know another one? Charge was for twelve bucks and some change.Briscoe: [with the wisecrack] You can't feed a family of... More
